Before I crack open the box on Pinnacle HD Studio Ultimate Collection 14, anyone have any thoughts on how it compares with Sony Vegas Studio Platinum 9.0? Both retail for $130.00... Um, I'm sorry, I mean $129.99. I went with the Pinnacle software because of the advertised special effects capability, but which is the better software overall?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback! Glory!

I've never used Pinnacle but I do have the Sony suite; maybe there's things I'm just not doing right (I never read manuals) but I haven't been able to create a finished product with Sony that looks as sharp and clear as I think it should. Truth is I've yet to find any video creation software I'm really happy with. Maybe if you good good results I'll be trying Pinnacle next.

I don't have either one. I went with ULead Video Studio.

I'd say you made the right choice from what bdp wrote. I have that problem with my software too. When you have a video in a window, the resolution is cut by about 75% leaving you sometimes with pixels instead of video.

Quite frankly, if I "upgrade" I'm going to frickin' by a MAC!

I've used Vegas and didn't like it much. Too complicated, too fiddly, all I want to do is crop some clips and splice them together with transitions. This shouldn't be hard. I'm currently using Adobe Premiere (not Elements) and like it well enough, does what I want. So does the Elements version, which is cheaper, but has a memory hole the size of the Gulf of Mexico and crashes when my project gets longer than 20 minutes. No problem with Premiere yet, but I think you have to buy the whole Adobe Creative Suite to get it.

I'm with Shyone -- next upgrade I'm getting a Mac, even crappy iMovie08 works better than most PC video editing software I've tried.

Yeah, truth is I don't even edit with Vegas, anytime I use it I have the video edited before I open it there - I never have been able to understand how to edit with it.

I've been trying out the Ulead Video Studio since I used to use their Media Studio Pro but it's not nearly as good (but the Media Studio doesn't like Win7 and Corel doesn't seem interested in fixing that "issue"). I've also been trying out something called Magix Movie Edit Pro 15. It's not quite as polished but it looks like it might have some promise. They have a 7 day trial (that extends to 30 with an email or something...I don't remember but it was easy).

I know a lot of programs have tons of little widgets (or whatever) that let you do tons of transformations and shit like that but, honestly, 99% of that stuff is useless crap. Most of the time you'll do straight cuts and a few little wipes here and there (if you overuse them it's just annoying). Some color controls are good (if they're worth a damn) and maybe good title stuff.

I liked the old Media Studio because it could import lots of formats (at the time) and it only re-encoded the parts of the file I worked on so there was no generation loss except at edit points (and it made things fast). I'm now looking at getting a new camera and need something to handle new formats (ie. AVCHD with 5.1 audio...there's a new Panny that shoots at 1080/60p which is non-spec so I'm curious what will handle the files).

Anyhow, I know most, if not all, these programs have trials so if you're not sure just grab the demo and test them before opening the box.

God does not exist. Just ask him yourself.

If you refer to "jesus" as "Yeshua" you are probably a condescending fucktard.

PLEASE NOTE: Just because I speak as if YHWH/jesus exist does not mean they do. It's simply for the sake of the argument.

I thought I'd dig up this old thread to ask if anyone has tried Edius (Edius Neo 2.5 I think is the exact version...not Edius 5.x the hyper expensive version)?

I was thinking about giving it a trying but wanted to see if anyone has used it or not. It seems quite a few Vegas users are moving to it for real time AVCHD and I've read that the interface makes a lot more sense too (Vegas is odd to me). I might just go grab the trial (I just hate filling out those forms) since $200 is too much to drop sight unseen.
