I've been sitting here for hours, going through all the "virtual tours" of the homes listed about half-way down on the left-hand side of the website. Most of them are, quite simply, HIDEOUS!!! Most of them are not just poorly furnished with mismatched, old, ugly, and cheap furniture, but are also lacking much in the way of personality and seem, quite simply, bare. They don't look like warm, inviting homes in any which way. Their houses just seem so cold. And so sad. Like the woman who cleans her teeth with bicarb soda to save money on buying toothpaste. And the way they all call their kitchens their "headquarters" (puke). Or the woman who said she spends 50% of her time in the kitchen. The one that really made me sad, though, was the pregnant woman whose husband complained about the mess, and attended to the baby so she could get a whole night's sleep in order to clean up. Parents today expend extraordinary amounts of time and energy taking their daughters from one sports event to another, week after week, even to the point where it exhausts the family and family resources. The fruits we see are that today’s Christian women are often ill-prepared to be Biblically obedient wives and mothers. This brings to mind a couple of questions: “Why do we spend so much time preparing our daughters to play sports?" and "What does it prepare them for in the future?” My answer is that sports prepare women to be more like men. Instead of spending all that time preparing our daughters as the Bible directs, we are training them to be like men so they can better compete with men in traditionally masculine roles - i.e., compete with them in the workforce, in politics, in the military, and in sports. Of course, because women should have a male authority over them. If it's not a husband then the father. And I'm fucking 35 years old! I was like, "OK, whatever". Luckily we do not live together, so he can say whatever he wants, those are just empty words, but I rolled my eyes, so he quickly stopped that. Especially that he left me and my mother when I was 8. Not that he did not visit me, but he did not know me growing up as if he had been around. So what authority he wants to be over me now over the age of 30? That's a fucking joke! My dad did this with me as well. But when I was a Christian, I believed him! I thought all of that crap was true. I used to read books about biblical femininity, and tell my other Christian girlfriends about what submission meant. I could have turned into one of these crazy women!! I was so close! Thankfully I got away from Christianity and all of its repressiveness. Im still working on taking back the confidence and self respect that those ideas stole away from me. We have a couple of electric ones from around the 1970s (one of which we miraculously bought from a thrift shop, in working order and with all its accessories, for $50!!!) The first sewing machine I learned upon was one my parents got when they got married (around '72) and I have a newer one that I got in 2007. The 70s model is far sturdier than the newer one. I've also sew upon a late 1800s sewing machine where you have to work the pedal (that is probably my favorite one since you can work it without electricity). I have a SINGER 66 and a SINGER 99K that are both treadles. They came with a motor option later I think. but mine are foot powered dynamos. I have a 99 that is a HAND CRANK if you can believe THAT! How you guide fabric and crank the handle is a skill, let me tell you. My hands are very skilled, but that takes real coordination. And in case anyone thinks I am too domesticated, I also break them down, repair, restore and SELL the old gear driven SINGERS online. It is the only way I can cope with my collecting addiction. Rescue, heal, adopt....rescue, heal, adopt. Or my home would be stacked to the rafters with these GREAT old sewing machines that sew better than anything made in the last thirty five years.
