Goodbye Jesus

Pentecostals

So i have an uncle who admittedly I never see but I got a call out of nowhere last October from him. Just a catch up i suppose but then he starts telling me how he's found Christ and he's a Pentecostal and such and kinda starts evangelizing to me but it felt more like he was just explaining it to me and not trying to convert me. The things he said though were insane. I grew up church of christ but really wasn't involved much. We weren't active really although I did walk in on my parents standing in a circle all holding hands shaking and screaming weird things (tongues I suppose) but I don't think I was supposed to see that.

Anyways he's telling me stuff like he won't own anything with the word "devil" in it. Like someone gave him a Dirt Devil for xmas and he tossed it in the trash. I mean it's a vacuum cleaner! I asked if he'd eat a devils food cake and he said he wouldn't. I tried to explain it was only flour and water and eggs and junk but he didn't get past the devil part.

I haven't heard from him since then but someone who's an ex-pentecostal posted in the testimony forum and it reminded me of his phone call.

Just crazy

He won't eat devil's food?

Well then, you'll just have to tell him it's chocolate cake. :yum:

:Wendywhatever:

It's sick and sad listening to people who've just found "faith" yet are so weak in both faith and esteem they can't even bear to hear certain words.

Christianity is like a crow that comes and picks at the bones of your sense of self and makes you think you have wings.

My mom won't put artichoke "chokes" in the compost because she worries that-- get this-- that those fine strands will somehow miraculously survive composting and the soil to choke her with whatever crop she grew.

So by comparison not eating "devil's food cake" sounds sane.

Some Christians are soooo superstitious!

Pentacostals.....

They are, without a doubt, the most insane Christian sect in America. They're responsible for the Hell House events held each Halloween and for Jesus Camp.

I'm an ex-pentecostal (UPCI) and never ran into that. I've run into superstitions like it, though -- some which were more pitiable, some less so. I have been told to change my desktop wallpaper -- a scene from SimCity 4 -- because my mom was convinced that there was a demonic face in the clouds. Obviously, Maxis and EA are part of a Satanic conspiracy, and are subverting good Christian folk through their games.

The Pentecostals are one of the most radical sect of Christianity..Very emotional..and very FAKE! Ive been to a few of the churches and they are OUT THERE! I know some Charismatics and their lives are messed up..they sin like the rest..go to church speak in jibber jabber..run around and then tell how holy they are...I just ask any thinking person with 2 brain cells to just stand back and observe....What I dont understand is how people can be in these types of churches for years....

I'm Ex-penticostal and believe me, they are not like that. Anyone who believes stuff like that is going way overboard. I knew of one lady who used to cut anything remotely non-christian out of her TV guide (like horroscopes, adds for psychics etc). That's extremist bull shit and no sane Christian would go that far.

I disagree. The Cult I was in was like that. Take Smurfs for example... They believed they were the devil incarnate. Church services, Smurf burnings (along with records, playing cards and anything else seen as 'evil') on the topic of the hour as hysterias navigated fear. Perhaps your particular church wasn't as out there as some other Pentecostal sects, but they are out there. It's one of the most emotionally crippling sects of Christianity.

I dare say that I don't see anything about the Christian religion 'sane', just varying degrees of insanity in my opinion.

I have to agree with Japedo here. I was also in the Ass of God and the C of God as well. They were absolutely nuts. My mom wouldn't let me have secular music. I can remember all the stupid shit with some songs being played backwards having satanic messages in them. Like Queen's Another One Bites the Dust supposedly says "Decide to smoke marijuana" when played backwards. That was all pentecostals, folks. They are lunatics. My ex-wife's mentor used to claim to see angels and demons all the damned time. And my ex would see someone on the news arrested for murder or something equally horrible and say how she could just SEE the demons in them. :Wendywhatever:

This is TYPICAL pentecostal behavior. If you've experienced differently OnceConvinced, then you're the exception not the rule.

Although I wasn't a pentecostal myself (ex-southern baptist), my wife was. Her grandfather was an AOG minister. When she was a teenager her mother and aunt tried to exorcize an "evil spirit" from her, which was no more than the attitude of a headstrong teenage girl. She laughs about that now as an ex-christian, but it was very real to her and her family at the time. Such superstitions!

Well, praise be to Jahee-ya-sus-ahaaa!!! An Ex UPC'er!!! :bounce::woohoo::wicked::bounce:

As a former UPCI, Holy Ghost filled, tongues-talking, holy rollin', Jesus-Name Pentecostal, I salute thee upon thy deconversion! I'd be curious to know more about your experience?

Actually, one of the churches I was in there was one member who refused to shop at a Supervalue store after he saw on the sales receipt it said "Store Number 666". Even in my youth I tried to tell him that the store down the road was store #667, but he was still convinced it was a sign of Satan. It was lunatic fanatacism like that which eventually led to me to question the sanity of the whole belief system. I guess I was too smart to stay saved... :(

I was raised Pentecostal. We went to AOG, COG and all kinds of storefront churches, backwoods churches and tent meetings. I actually went through an exorcism once. I remember feeling stupid at the time but I really believed I was possessed. I was asked to come and repent once because I cut my bangs. My father made us wear dresses to go swimming. I can't stand to talk to him now because he still preaches that shit even after he ran off with my Sunday school teacher when I was a kid, and remarried 3 times after divorcing my Mom.I'm 49 and some of that shit still screws with my head, but I'm getting better.

What pisses me off so bad is that I had a lot of great LPs like Frank Zappa and I broke them into pieces because of scare shit like this. I listen to vinyl for music and I cringe to no end when I remember that act of sin to those albums. Damn the stupidity!

So I have no idea what denomination I was when i was younger but I remember not being able to play cards (even Sorry) or watching the Smurfs and just shit like that.

For some reason church of christ or god maybe or assembly of god come to mind but I'm not really sure.

I remember my mom always telling me about what the "end tiems" will be like and some guy had predicted when it would be. I remember her telling me about a blood red moon and just very strange shit.

Well maybe in the States Pente's are a lot more extreme. I've been to quite a few Pentecostal churches in New Zealand and none of them are like what you guys are saying. Yeah sure, there is the odd nutter, but it's the same with every denomination I have come across..

I'll send him a cake and call it Satan's Delight and see whats up then!
I was at a family get-together a couple of years ago and there was a dish there that was called, Heavenly Hash. When I heard the name, I said, "It looks more like Satan's Sludge to me." :lmao:

My father and grandfather (along with three uncles) were Pentecostal Holiness preachers. Once my older brother brought home some piano music books with the music of Bread and Chicago (real rockers there.) My father started storming around the house, calling the music "pornography." Any rock music was strictly off-limits (which is one of the reasons I started playing in a band.)

As for playing cards, Crazy Eights and Old Maid cards were perfectly acceptable. However, we couldn't have standard playing cards, even if we were playing Crazy Eights with them!

I've got tons of other ridiculous superstition stories like this.

Ah, there I go with my ethnocentricity again. I don't even think about things being different elsewhere in the world. But yes, in the states, the pentecostals are a bunch of nutbags. I've seen video of some pentecostal churches in Australia and they seemed pretty much like those in the US too...although I guess all I really saw was the worship portion of the service...the singing and all that shite.

I only went to a Pentecostal church one time. That was enough for me. Those people scared the shit out of me. I was standing there and then all of a sudden, someone fell out in the middle of the aisle talking gibberish. I was only like 10 years old.
