Lovely day with steak, pork, and grilled veggies and great conversation about what real spirituality is and how we are trying to pursue it now. Around here, we mowed the lawn, cleaned the house, did some planning for our trip to Europe this summer, and are about to relax outside with the grill and some whiskey (well, he'll have beer, but there is no accounting for taste). I hope this went well. It's probably not funny to the two of you, but I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes when I read this!!! IBF, you are just too cute!!! Wow, be careful of power lines also. We lost a window cleaner just a couple of years ago because he didn't notice the powerlines and walked his ladder right into them. Thank you all for your concern and interested posts. The ladder was as heavy and awkward as usual, but we managed to clean all the windows and move the ladder half a dozen times without breaking up over it. hereticzero Posted June 14, 2009 Share Posted June 14, 2009 Garden and yard work, in between rain showers. I can always tell when I've not spent enough time in the yard, I get irritable too easily. I've weeded the garden sooner than last year. It has rained more this spring than the last six. My garden needs a few days of hot sunlight. I've planted hops, for a decorator and scent (plus making beer helps too!) and pear trees this year. Cherry trees are producing cherries this year. I think the fruit tree folks sent the wrong cherry trees, maybe even hybrids? They were supposed to take a male tree to pollinate but the male tree died three years ago and I have not replaced it, so they are cross-pollinating(?), which doesn't bother me cuz I got cherries. They were Bings and Japanese cherry trees. I don't know that much about them, just what I read in the catalogs. The pear trees are sprouting limbs and should be producing fruit in one or two years from now. I bought bigger trees than the saplings. I may plant plumb trees next fall. I have more cherry trees, tulips and crocus coming this fall. The crocus are to come up in the early spring. I love tulips so I've got enough tulips to cover my yard. I may expand my front garden to make more planting room. I have lilies and irises that grow wild and they are mowed with the lawn to trim. I let them grow up against the house to attract bees for the trees and garden. When I bought this house almost six years ago, the yard was dead in the front and back because of Nebraska drought and neglect. I got the yard to grow back more presentable and have the stickers and thorns under control. If you have puncture vine or sand spurs, pull up the plant, plant fast growing grass over it and the grass will eventually crowd the thorns out, but you have to pull up the vines when they first grow or every seed they drop will be able to grow over a ten-year period. Water! Clean up after the friggin' dog! And you should not have much troubles with thorns. The large elm tree on the side of the house collapsed in the first ice storm we had after moving in. It broke a section perhaps over 100 feet that fell between my house and my neighbors'. BOOM! Sounded like a car crashed into the house! Only dented a gutter. I had to have it cut down and hauled out--tree cutter hauled out at least 14 stock truck loads of wood for firewood. Elms are nice trees for a forest but not in town around yards. The wood gives out under heavy loads. I think fruit trees such as pear trees are better for yards and close to houses because the branches do not break off under heavy loads, as much as elms. In Missouri where I was born, Ruskin Heights planted pear trees for a memorial to those who lived and died during the tornado that hit May 20, 1957. I was six months old when we got clobbered. We lived in a house trailer and the winds stripped the siding off and rattled everything off the walls like an earth quake--my mother told me about the storm. She was a nervous wreck living around train yards--she said the winds sounded like a giant train coming through town. Come to think of it, I think my PTSD started early in life. I love old trees. I have a mulberry tree that is more than 40 years old. It sprouts green puffy shoots, or whatever they are called, that float around in the air and pollinates most of the mulberry trees in my town, or so the city claims. The workers like to stop and look at the tree. It does not look all that special to me, it is big and old. If I outlive it, I intend to make a dining room table out of the trunk of it. I have a linden tree that is also more than 30 years old. I harvest the flowers from it shortly after blooming for flu season. When we picked them out, I don't think it was intentional to follow a theme. Revolutionary Road was the most intense of the three, the other two were fluff but with the same underlying idea, The Ramen Girl and New In Town. I got up early, spent quality time with Daisy (my doG,) puttered around the house, played on the computer and then went to breakfast with my best friends, who just happen to be the greatest people on the planet! Then, I went to my parent’s house and fixed steamed shrimp for my dad for Father’s Day. Now I’m at home, listening to music and getting ready for the upcoming week, which is going to be very busy and lot’s of fun! It’s a wonderful life!!! I can't wait as I've been stuck in the house for three weeks due to the hot weather and my allergies. I don't want to make my grandmother anxious so I've only been taking a morning trip to the liquor store and only leaving the house for work, but on Sunday I'll be packing some ice packs( to assure my grandmother I won't get sick from the heat)and heading on down to the beach for some bratwurst and polka. It's all about the food. We lost one of our best cooks last Sunday night after one of our wonderful breakfasts. Very unexpected heart attack took out a 55 year old strong, healthy man.
