Please Tell Me About Yourself

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get a social profile of ex-C. And I'd like to hear about you. So please tell me about yourself. I may try to put some numbers together over here on these facts about us, so it would help me tremendously if you would try to address each of the following: age, gender, race, location, religion/philosophy, method of income, educational level, and political leanings.

To give an example, I'll go first...

I am 39 years old by the calendar, 25 years old emotionally, and 60 years old cognitively. I'm white and all male. I'll die in North Carolina if I can. I grew up in the outer suburbs of Winston-Salem. I'm an ex-Christian heathen with both mystical and utilitarian leanings. I'm blue-collar by choice. I majored in math. I'm libertarian.

What about you?

52 years old

Male

White culturally and by appearance, probably well over 75% white by DNA

Lifelong resident of East Tennessee

No religion

Public school teacher

Bachelor in business ('81) Master in secondary teaching of English ('00) + many credit hours unrelated to either, mostly psychology, philosophy, anthropology.

As for politics, short answer is liberal/progressive. However, I line up with conservatives on a balanced budget, welfare reform, and controlling immigration.

Ah thank you Ro!

Can I ask you a question? What kind of education did your parents have and what did they do for a living?

Parents high school educated, no college (couldn't afford it). They moved to Oak Ridge after WWII. Dad was a technician at a nuclear facility. Mom was a secretary for ORAU who worked her way up to office manager.

White male, 63. Old, but got to see all the really cool bands. Born in Ohio and sold my graphics business to move to Florida 25 years ago. Some college (Univ. of Cincinnati - the FBI tried to recruit me there!) and a private commercial art school. Conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. Oddly enough, a Republican who turned Democratic, then Independent, then Nothing. Avoided being saved during a childhood of being dragged to the Church of God (Anderson) three times a week plus camps. Eventually succumbed to fundy religion due to a co-worker at my first job in Florida. He's dead now, so no hard feelings. Studied at a Moody campus down here and learned too much to entertain the Bible any more. Dabbled in all things Eastern and mystic and found them also to be lacking. I like long walks on the beach and poking dead things with a stick.

Hope that helps.

Religion/philosophy: Waffled around for many years with mysticism/Buddhism. Settled on Vajrayana Buddhism. Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal is my teacher.

Politics: Liberal now, but have registered both Democrat and Republican over the years. Not satisfied with any major party at this time.

White male, 45, married 12 years in a few months, born and raised in a middle class, blue collar family in ID, BA Poli Sci from a state U, some grad work at GWU in DC, I live to travel and travel to live, but have spent the past 7 years living in Russia with a few months here and there in places like India, Thailand, Venezuela and Italy. Worked 9 years in a grocery store before going to college, hated my life to near suicide and then went to school and was reborn. Since I've worked as a stock broker, a buyer for the US Mint in the Numismatics dept, a technical writer for HUD and finally a speech writer for the US DOJ before I once again hated my life to the point of near suicide. Over the past 10 years I've run my own investment business and it makes me happy, keeps me interested like no work ever has and keeps me under a constant level of measured stress, which may explain why I'm such a curmudgeon. I still live to travel and travel to live. No kids, but we have a cat we both adore.

49 y.o. white heterosexual male, high school grad (barely) with a couple of years of college. Born and raised in the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula, had no religious grounding growing up, converted to Xtianity just shy of 21, deconverted some 17 or so years later (that's hard to pin down to precise dates). I'm single and have been for life, was not sexually active until after 40 and haven't been for over two years now. My economic background is lower middle class, at times bordering on poverty when I was a child. No current political affiliation.

White, male, 34 years old. Grew up in Tennessee. Lived in Texas and Colorado for a little while. Been in Kansas for 9 years. Married 10 years. No kids... maybe someday.

I either tell people that I'm an atheist or that I'm not religious depending on the impression I want to make.

First education/career: associate's degree, automotive/diesel tech school, worked as a diesel mechanic for 16 years.

Second education/career: Bachelor's in mechanical engineering, been hired for an engineering job starting the first week of 2012.

Political leanings: staunch Republican up to age 25. Political limbo from 25 to 30. Now consider myself an independent, been voting for Democrats out of sheer disgust for their competition- not out of any loyalty to them. I tend to score left/libertarian on political quizzes.

Parents: Dad worked at a factory for his first career. Finished his degree in industrial arts in his mid 20's. Moved up at the factory for a few years before the bipolar caught up with him. Went nuts in his early/mid 30's. Got meds. Calmed down. Worked as a security guard for the rest of his career. Mom mostly stayed at home/had the occasional part-time job until Dad's bipolar thing reared its ugly heard. She went back to school in her mid-30's, got a degree and worked as an RN for the rest of her career. Saved us from poverty.

You could say that my economic class has ranged from food stamps to lower middle class at different points in my life. I'm trying to claw my way solidly into the middle class, and should be able to pretty soon... assuming everything works out.

Oops, forgot about political persuasion. Republican and big supporter of Reagan when I first became politically aware; held that position through GWI and then deconverted from xianity and started questioning all my previous values so ended up supporting Clinton. I fell into discord with Clinton over Kosovo and got fairly involved in the protest movement in DC. I've continued to question my values and find I can't support any party anymore, though I support the ideals of freedom and justice and representative government. Freedom to me is a balance as too much or too little leads to despotism in one form or another. All in all, I believe the people need to be given a true voice in government, which is tempered with rights and limited to those issues that affect us all so that we don't too find ourselves tyrannized by the crowds.

I'm male, 30 years old, straight, non-religious, and born, raised and living in New Jersey. Politically, I'm definitely socially left (for gay rights, tired of seeing religious bigots bitch about non-Christians and the non-religious), all for equality. Fiscal issues? I think the government should provide a safety net for people who fall upon hard luck to be able to get back up, so I guess that means I'm economically left? As long as it's possible to be paid for.

My deconversion was quite simple. I believed in Christianity when I was a kid because I was taught it. At 12, I started to worry about my soul and take my religion seriously (as I'd been ignoring it for quite a while, never going to church or anything), and would get offended by the usual crap Christians get offended by. But I also wondered why so many religions existed if ours was true, then I thought what is the proof that ours is true, and so on. It wasn't hard to just stop believing in Christianity altogether.

My actual negativity towards Christianity didn't start until I saw what many Christians are actually like, how bigoted and nasty they can be, how they're trying to replace science education with Christian indoctrination (this "creationism" shit), and how the more Christian someone is, the more they're attached to politics I totally disagree with. Before I saw that, I had no beef with the religion; I merely didn't believe in it. Now I rejoice seeing studies and surveys showing people are less likely to take their religion seriously, and that Christianity has an image problem with the younger generation.

54 years old, white, male, live in the Chicago area, where I was born and raised; I'm an ex-Christian little-"a" atheist. High school honors graduate, self-taught software developer, which I've done mostly as an independent IT consultant for the past 28 years. My only formal post HS "education" was a year of Bible Institute, which you could, I suppose, think of as a technical school of sorts, albeit for something almost entirely useless.

25 years old soon enough, slowly but surely studying a B.A. in Computer Science. Grew up in a secular home. Both parents didn't finish high school. My mother was a stay at home mum and my father a factory worker/any kind of manual labor. Became a fundamentalist in my late teens and left during the early stages of my Bible college training last year.

Currently, I work in I.T. support, am an atheist with animist leanings and politically; I'm kinda all over the place. I've got strong socialist leanings but I guess I'd class my self as mostly "center right".

43y/o White Male

-

Central Valley California for most of my life (although I've lived in Texas, Illinois, Arizona, and Nevada,,, but I always end up back here in Central CA)

-

As a child, I didn't think much about religion. I tried to understand, but to me, people in the Free Will Baptist churches that my parents forced me to go to, didn't really seem to live up to what they preached.

-

My philosophy is still work in progress, and always will be.

-

I have a city/government job, and I'm always under the threat of being let go, due to private companies wanting to move in.

-

I've got an AA degree in automotive and diesel technology. But I've taken different courses like industrial electronics, and a multitude of junior college classes of things I was interested in for a short time. (I lose interest quite easy sometimes)

-

I really can't see any reason to affiliate myself with any political group, instead, I take on each issue, one at a time.

Not much education to speak of but managed to get one son through college and have a daughter still in college and a son in High school. I used to be republican but couldn't follow that crazy bunch once I de-converted. I lean left I guess but really don't trust any political party. I usually just try to follow what Vigile, Florduh, and Japedo say about politics.

I am 38 getting closer to 39, grrr. I was married, and had a child who turned 18 a week or so ago. I have raised him all on my own. I became a born again christian when my marriage broke up when my son was 18mnths old. I only left it a year or so ago now. I finished college (highschool) for you guys, and worked for a while, then stopped to raise my son for 10 or so years. Then I got into childcare, and now I am working fulltime in an office job. I have no political leanings whatsover. I am an Aussie. I am hoping my son will go through university.

I grew up in poverty with a single mum. My Dad is a blue collar builder. Thats all folks.
