Pope Calls For All-Out Push Against Gay Marriage

The pope also called for a push against pre-marital sex. I don't think any state in the US will vote serious laws against sex between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman (they might try to recriminalize birth control though, who knows). They will push back against any equality for gays, lesbians, bis and transgendered.
The equivalent issue twenty years ago, i.e. the NY Catholic conference's repeated opposition to a gay rights bill, spurred me to stop attending mass so as to stop supporting my oppressor. Later on the contradictions in Christianity became all the more clear, but that was the last straw as far as my church attendance went.
Sad today.

If he's pushing his doctrine outside the scope of his religion then that's a declaration of war then.

There's an elegant solution to most Bible problems. The Bible is the word of ignorant men who couldn't agree with each other.

In Iran and other parts of the mid east and Indonesia, and Africa, Christians and Muslims murder homosexuals and in many of those countries, such murder is approved of by law and the religions. I won't see the end of Christianity in my lifetime but it will come some day either by force or boredom.A Jihad against gay marriage ?

Here in Hungary however we are going backwards. The conservative government that we have now just modified the constitution and put into it that marriage is between a man and a woman. (So far it wasn't defined in the constitution.) As well as they put lots of references to God and Christianity in the new constitution (when most people here aren't even religious or only nominal Christians). Obviously this is the influence of the Catholic Church who are supporting them. Problem is people are ignorant about homosexuality and it's easy to lead them on by saying things like it's "unnatural" (obviosuly they haven't heard about homosexual behaviour in the animal kingdom). Here gay marriage isn't even discussed. I haven't heard yet anybody discussing it on a serious level in the media. There is an annual Gay Pride but it's usually accompanied by scandals - the conservative leaders of the capital trying to find their ways around laws and somehow ban it or make it hard to carry it out, far-right sympathisers throwing stones on the participants and so on. So basically you have the gay people, who don't really have a voice, not nearly as strong as in the US. You have the opposers, who are pretty loud and aggressive - and passively supported by the conservative government and the churches. And an apathic majority.
The positive is that, when I went to a gay website a couple of weeks ago and I read the coming out stories for most people it turned out well. Parents, friends were supportive, accepting. Though I don't know if this is reperesentative or it's just that people with a positive experience tend to post their stories more. I'd like to hope it's representative.

I have heard about this, Suzy. How horrible. Is it true that the EU is considering whether the anti-human rights slant of the govt should jeopardize Hungary's status in the union?

Perhaps they are scared priests will leave and find same sex love if gay marriage becomes the norm.
The vow of chastity which addresses heterosexual behavior gets kicked out the door. The definition of chastity would need to be revised to include same sex love which is currently defined as an abomination by catholics.
This opens the door to speculation that the appeal to priesthood or service to the church was greater for those whose vow of chastity was a non-issue.You'll notice that recent history has confirmed the infestation of that organization by opportunistic pedophiles.
Also, no stretch of the imagination to understand that in a world where homosexuality was illegal, the church proved a valid refuge and cover, especially in small towns. You would be poor but you would be safe if you played your cards right.
The church would lose a big part of its use... a platform for pedophiles and protecting unassumed homosexuals.
