Resources For Unequally Yoked Marriages

Recommended Posts

I'd like to start a pinned thread with helpful links and other resources for folks who now find themselves in unequally yoked marriages. This is one of the most common topics I see around here, so I figured maybe we should centralize what resources we can find. CAVEAT: Most of this is experiential in nature, and not necessarily research-based as there has been almost no actual research on the topic.

Here are a few of the places I have found so far:

Captain Cassidy's Blog Series on the Unequally Yoked Club

Godless in Dixie's Advice for the Unequally Yoked

Dale McGowan's upcoming book In Faith and In Doubt, on atheist/Christian marriages (available August 2014)

Dale McGowan's blog posts he made on writing the book at Parenting Beyond Belief

The Thinking Atheist: Can Atheists and Believers Have Committed Love Relationships (podcast)

John Shore's letter from an atheist married to a Christian

NPR piece on Making Marriage Work When Only One Spouse Believes in God

Memoirs of an Ex-Christian: An Atheist-Christian Marriage Can Work

The BitterSweet End: Being in a Mixed Marriage

Rachel Held Evans: Audience Interview with a Mixed Faith Marriage (Atheist-Christian)

Living Life Without a Net response to reader

Please add to this list as you find more resources!

Dr.No, I think this is a great idea!! And you are so right...we have many new members that are non-believers living with a believer and it is a dilemma that always needs to be discussed. We are talking about people's marriages here!!

Thanks for posting this wonderful, important topic and for all the time and thought you put into it!! I think it will be a great help for many on Ex-c. It is now pinned. biggrin.png

This is indeed a good listing of resources.  I'm not in this situation myself - but it is a common posting topic.  And the people in this situation have repeated problems with their spouses and extended families on the topic.

Thank you very much!

I don't know where to ask this, so... how do I gain access to the Ex-Christian Sexuality forum?

I think you need to PM one of the mods and ask for the password.

Dr.No: Thanks for your references. I was just thinking today about a young couple who are good friends with my wife and me, both of whom are Xtians.  I mean they are as nice a couple as you could ever know. And it made me think that we ex-Xtians must be very careful to  encourage non-Xtians to make their marriages to Xtians work despite the differences in religion. We should not be too hasty to be hard on the Xtian spouse who may very well be a good person. Most Xtians are actually good people who merely have been deceived. If anyone must break up a marriage because of religion it should normally be the Xtian, not the non-Xtian, except in unusual cases. It's the radical Xtians who consider non-Xtians to be less than human, not the other way around.   bill

Thanks Bill. I think that whether or not a couple stays together is completely up to the parties involved, and in many cases divorce may truly be the best option. But I agree that we can't be too hasty either way. De-converting is a life-changing experience in and of itself. No need to throw divorce into the mix right away. Take some time to get comfortable in your new worldview before making that call, if you can.

Found an interesting blog by an atheist married to a believer. He writes about a number of issues but has a section dedicated just to his home life. Encouraging stuff.
