Goodbye Jesus

Humans Write A Lot Of Bullpucky

Something on my mind.

Why use the arguments:

  • "the bible is the most translated book of all time!"
  • "we have lots of manuscripts that prove the bible is true!"
  • "look, even the atheist websites prove that there's lots of manuscripts!"

Do you not see the enormous leap one must make between a: ok, yes, the bible stories had lots of copies and b: they're all true and jesus is god?

There's a lot of going back and forth with manuscripts, and yes, it's great to find out the history of these scripts.  But if I may, how many here aren't 7th Day Adventists?  SDAs (my former sect) revere their prophet, Ellen White, and treat her writings with virtually the same respect as the bible.  They claim she's one of the most translated women in the world.  That may very well be true, but that doesn't mean that she once held up a 20lb. bible for a really long time, or that her prophecies were indeed from god.  You don't lose sleep over the fact that her books are translated into dozens of languages, or that the SDA sect has grown into millions of followers.

Likewise, take Islam.  None of you christians believe a that the koran was anymore divinely inspired than the Avengers comic.  Yet it's one of the biggest religions around.  It's interesting that Muslims deride the bible as being a book that's changed many many times, while their koran stayed true to form.  That claim may well be true, but christians dismiss that claim as easily as they dismiss the fiction of L. Ron Hubbard.

So christians, why do you think that because there's 'lots of manuscripts,' that the biblical stories are true?  There's also lots of copies of the koran, but you don't think that the angel Gabriel visited Mohammed, do you.  Likewise, you don't think Ellen White received visions from god and that the SDA church is the last remnant church.

When I was in the seventh grade (in a private christian school, of course), the teacher told us that the fact that the bible was the first book ever printed with a Gutenberg Press, was proof that it genuinely was the divinely inspired word of god.  Hmmm......

  • "the bible is the most translated book of all time!"

whenever they say this, please reminds them that translation might be wrong for so many reasons like different meaning, change of meaning, or typo error

one that I found hilarious is 16th century king james bible when the printing company mistakenly printing  "thou shall not commit adultery" into "thou shall commit adultery"

imagine if they gave it to people in the remote areas and they read it and did as the bible say

They use these "arguments" because that is all they have, and they do not realize (or don't care about) the fallaciousness of them.  SOP for most theists.

I'd like to see a movie where a Christian bookshop comes alive at night. All the books do battle and the book with the truest theology comes out the winner, he slays all the Joyce Meyer and Derek Prince books and then rapes and tortures all the John Mccarthur and John Piper-he really doesn't like them so he prolongs the agony. In the morning the shopkeeper opens the door to his bookshop and there are spines and pages everywhere and puddles of ink flowing from the slain. The glorious winner stands triumphant upon in the front window, the world now knows who is victorious!

Not to forget that True Morontheists™ care jack shit for the truth or fallacy of their claims. To them the only thing that matters is "am I obeying the right führer by claiming this?". This is also why it is (generally) useless to try and debate anything with them.

Quotations from Chairman Mao is one of the most widely read and biggest best-selling books of all time. So by that logic, we can extrapolate that Communism is the social system to which we should all adhere, right?

Not to forget that, also by the very same "reasoning", Mein Kampf must contain pure truth considering how well it sold in nazi Germany.

Oh wait morontheists will actually agree with this claim.

Makes sense to me.
