Goodbye Jesus

Jesus Camp

Okay, I admit I'm a bit behind the times on this (I often am); but I just watched the film "Jesus Camp" last night for the first time.  I know that I have gained a reputation around here as someone who is generally lucid, articulate, and clear, so it may come as somewhat of a shock when I say that at this point, all I can say about the film is:

jesus god damn christ!!!!!

I am attempting to clarify my thoughts in order to have something slightly more intelligent and coherent to say upon the subject; but I'm afraid I will need to call upon the vast resources of ex-c in order to do so.  If any of you have seen the film and would care to leave a comment based on your reaction to it, I would be ever so grateful as this will help lend clarity to what is currently a vapid vortex of anger, frustration, childhood memories, and general fuckitiness that is going through my mind right now.  Thank you.

I watched this a few years ago and have rewatched a time or two since then.

The most terrifying part of this movie is how familiar it was to me.  I'm not from a charismatic background, officially, but was definitely exposed to teaching like that on numerous occasions.  Seeing it from the outside is terrifying; even more terrifying is the influence these people have on our political processes.

There were other 'smaller' moments that are just sad.. when the kids in the dorm want to tell ghost stories and the adult shuts them down because 'God wants us to think about things that are good, holy, etc.'  Or the girl that loves to dance but always worries about whether or not she is pleasing God or just herself.  Way to encourage children to use their imaginations/brains/abilities!

I saw Jesus Camp a few years ago. That movie is fucking horrifying! Those kids didn't stand a chance, and the part where that batshit fundy shamed those kids was heartbreaking. From what I've heard, the kid with the rat tail and the logo shirts is now a preacher.

The camp was shut down after the movie came out. Gee, I wonder why...

I watched this last year as part of my final step of deconversion, and it was horrifying. The homeschooling? The little girl interrupting a woman to witness to her? The doomsday prophecies? AGH! But what was REALLY horrifying is that while I thought that at least a FEW of the kids would escape the cultiness or at least entertain other ideas and develop some of their own thoughts.

Looks like just the opposite happened if you start looking for "Where Are They Now?"

I haven't seen the movie, Prof, but by the look of things, it's a good thing I didn't.  I just want to help you through this. It really sucks when things like this trigger alot of dark feelings from the past.  I know!  Hang in there, sweetie, and don't watch those kinds of movies.  They just cause  you pain.  Don't know what else to say, just sending hugs and a cocktail or two.

I've found docs like this, however disturbing, to be helpful for me personally, just by illustrating how absurd those things are.

I appreciate it, Woodsy.  I watched it on purpose as a means of strengthening my arsenal against indoctrination techniques that may be used against my son during his childhood.  I knew it would dredge up a lot of fuckitiness from my past, but I'm willing to endure that if it helps me keep the boy safe.  I was just so horrified to think that such heavy burdens were being placed on the kids in the film.  No one's shoulders are broad enough to support the weight of the world.  On the bright side, I have a renewed sense of gratitude that I was able to dig myself out of such a deep pit as I was thrown into through childhood indoctrination.

As to a cocktail or two, I was about knee-deep in moonshine when I watched it.  My glass will be raised to you tonight.

She reminds me of my mother (yes, I am, quite literally, a sumbich!).

OpenPalm had a really good thread on this.  She was sent to one of those things.  Scary.

I attended some Bible camps in my day but they were tame.

Creeeeepy. I literally just watched Jesus Camp last night, and then come on here and the first thing I see is a post about it.

Going to read all of your replies now. I was absolutely disgusted, appalled, and sickened  by the film.

Watched it recently myself.  As I said elsewhere on the forums, I'm a big fan of the horror film genre.  I've seen the most gratuitously violent, psychologically terrifying movies out there.  This documentary scared me more than any other movie has.

It also made me furious, thinking of the way children are essentially brainwashed.  I nearly through something through a window.

It is scary, sick and appalling.  This film brought back so many memories from my childhood because it was exactly the way I was raised and exactly the same as what I went through (and came out of, by the grace of Thor!).  My wife watched it with me and afterwards told me that she never really believed me when I spoke about how bad my childhood was.

Outside of the speaking in tongues, this movie was a perfect description of my childhood as well.  I don't think many people who were never exposed to Christianity really understand what it can be like.  This is now my to-go reference movie for explaining what I went through.

I may have to watch this. I spent the formative years of my youth in some small crazy Pentecostal churches and a larger (still crazy) Assembly of God church. I've tried to explain how fucked up these places were to my wife but she can't comprehend since she was never exposed to anything like it.

The freakiest thing for me was that me and my boyfriend both saw a strong resemblance to the church we used to go to. It was classified as "non-denominational", welcoming, accepting, and "New Age". We never realized, until this film, how terrifying it was inside those walls. The Pentecostal influence was very strong there, we were told that everyone can speak in tongues if they are truly in the Spirit, there was a lot of flopping around on the floor and screaming and crying going on.

*shudders* so glad I'm out. So, so glad.

It was the same for my wife.  I've tried over the years to explain to her what my childhood was like and why I still have certain "isms" to this day.  I think, after watching it with me last night, she has a deeper appreciation for what I went through.  She kept saying, "This is child abuse!  Why isn't this illegal?"  You and I are the lucky ones Fernweh.

It absolutely is child abuse. My poor boyfriend was getting so frustrated with me, because every 10 mins or so I'd be so overwhelmed with anger and disbelief that I had to pause the film and go on a rant. Haha.

How do you sleep at night as a parent knowing that you are literally lying to your child every single day? The homeschooling just blew my mind. I couldn't believe that was legal.
