Satanism

There are a copious amount of different types of Satanism, the most common is probably Laveyan Satanism. There are many misconceptions about Satanism and people normally view it as being evil. This is not always true. Also, Satanism did not derive from Christianity, it had been formed before.

Laveyan Satanism

Laveyan Satanism is basically the most common of the Satanist religion. Also known as Atheistic Satanism, this form of Satanism does not actually believe that Satan exists. This is an atheistic based religion believing that Satan is a symbol for earthly freedom, wealth, and success. Founded in the '60s by Anton Szandor Lavey. Lavey later founded the church of Satan, also writing the Satanic Bible. Lavey Stated that neither Satan, nor God exists. He encourages people to seek power and wealth with in themselves; seeking God with in themself. Acting as if God is oneself.

Theistic Satanism

Theistic Satanism, or Spiritual Satanism or even Traditional Satanism resembles Laveyan Satanism in certain ways. Theistic Satanism believes that their is a supernatural being, often being Satan. (Other names are used) The resemblance with Laveyan Satanism is how they view Satan, much like Laveyan Satanism, they view Satan as acting as a Symbol for freedom, wealth, etc. The only difference is the recognizance of His existence.

Setian

Setians believe that the true Prince of Darkness is called Set. A God whom is responsible for creating consciousness. A myth is what Setians go by as being a symbol for their beliefs. In this myth Set protects Ra (The Sun God) and allows the sun to "Xeper" (I have come into being). The symbol represents how Set made us newly created with every self-determined action in which we took upon ourselves. This religion was founded by Aquino in 1975. Aquino was a priest at the Church of Satan with Lavey, but, he did not agree with everything, therefore, creating Setian. Aquino owns the Temple of Set.

Demonolators

Demonolators do not focus on Satan himself, but his Demons. They perform rituals and other similar things to contact these Demons. What they do with this is ask for assistance, guidance, and help through their lives.

Diabolators

Diabolators, unlike Laveyan Satanists, believe that Satan actually exists and they even worship him. The followers of this religion devote themselves to "Devil Worshipping" and currently own the Church of Azazel, Order of Eternal Darkness, and the Temple of Diabolical Youth.

Gnostic

Gnostic followers, unlike other forms of Satanism, use certain Christian terms. They believe that the Christian God exists, but also they believe that Satan exists. According to them, Satan is the creator of the world. Gnostics believe in oneself, as of pleasing themself in order to become "GodHead" (enlightment) to become gnosis (knowledge).

Satanism did not derive from Christianity, it had been formed before.

Where did you find that information? The name or title is found in the Jewish writings of Job and Zechariah, but I've never seen anything about worship being given to him. Clearly the cultures surrounding the Hebrews had idols and images that believers would consider satanic, but is there anything about this particular character being worshiped? I've heard about occultism within Judaism, which some think came through Solomon and his multicultural wives (the "Star of David" being one protective star symbol that is tied to the occult), so maybe that is where it started.

I researched it for a while. To answer your question, Satanism had derived long before, but not necessarily in the form of worshiping Satan. See, Satanism is considered anything in that general factor, if you understand what I am stating. It goes back to even the worshiping of Baal. Even Theistic Satanism came before it. I hoped that answered your question.

My understanding is that "Satan", as a word, comes directly from the Judeo-Christian faith, referring to the fallen angel Lucifer. Baal is not the same as Satan, unless I am not understanding your meaning. I'm not understanding your view that "things like that" are all Satanism. Could you give a more precise definition?

Other thoughts:

Anton LeVey didn't start his thing until the 1960s/70s.

There are practices that the Catholic Church interpreted as being "Satanist" but which really weren't--more like protest or parody.

Baal was a god of ancient Canaan and Palestine. He didn't have horns, and wasn't associated with evil except in the view that the Hebrews thought it was evil to worship him. For clarification on Baal worship using archaeological evidence you might find this BBC documentary interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV275N4IZ5E

The word Satan was not always used as a name. The definition of it means "adversary", so it does not all have to do with the actual Satan.

Can you give a complete definition for clarity and discussion's sake?

Found the definition for "Satanism", could not find a legit definition of "Satan".

A religion and worship of the human body and the material world, not always the worship of the devil himself (unless you're of the Luciferian path). Satanism is type casted by the media along with witchcraft and paganism, as something evil... to be hated and feared whereas satanism does not promote violence, animal sacrifice or racial hatred in any manner.

I'm finding this documentary rather interesting--it traces Satan back to Zoriaster. It's a pretty good history, shows Satan as very much tied to Christianity. What about it interests you?

Well, when I was a christian, everything was always against Satanism. It was the complete opposite. So basically, I want to explore the area in which Christians fear most.

It's my understanding that the Church called *anything* it didn't like "Satanism". It's not an actual organized thing, except in the modern case of Anton LeVey and his ilk.
