Question For Neo-Pagans And An Explanation

Hi all

Some of you may have gleaned from my posts that I have academic training in anthropology, and am a sociology professor who does interdisciplinary research. I didn't come to this board to do research, but am starting a new project on challenges faced in everyday life by neopagans. You guys aren't my "sample" or anything, but it seemed like a logical thing to ask if you would be interested in doing an email interview. Again, if you're not familiar with me, please rest assured I'm not on this board as a researcher--I'm here as a fellow traveler. I'm also not a neo-pagan myself, I'm more of a Pantheist. If you'd be interested, just message me with your email address.

Thanks for reading, and I hope no one takes this the wrong way. It just made sense to ask. My actual "sample" is an IRL group in Seattle.

I consider myself wiccan, and we are neopagans, I never told my family (with the exception of my anti Christianity sister).

I do however know a lot about paganism and that many who open the broom closet put their self on danger of discrimination by Christian, Muslim, or Jewish people.

I will give you my email in messages, in case you have questions for me regarding the pagan religions.

I have travelled through various paths, and am not sure what label to attach to myself at this time, if any… but I was a solitary practitioner of witchcraft for a time and identified as a pagan. If I have an 'spirituality' then it would still be considered pagan as it is based in nature.

I will message you later.  :D

Thanks, both of you! It will take me a week or two to get started. :-)

Someone posted a quiz here once where it said what religion you are, a good one.  When I took it I was identified as pagan/unitarian.  I'm not Wiccan or any form of practicing paganism, but some of my beliefs tend that way.  If I qualify I would do an interview.

As long as you feel that it describes you, yes you would be welcome. I'm not imposing a definition on it.

Out of an abundance of caution (no offence - but as you effectively acknowledge in your first post, my knowledge of you is limited to your being a username on a website) I'm not going to make any promises, but:

  1. Whilst fairly idiosyncratic in my beliefs, I probably come within the broad category of neopagan.
  2. I'm prepared to have a look at your questions and then decide whether to answer provided this is done anonymously (in the sense that I am known only by my username and no other identifying details are required).

I can supply an e-mail address, but wonder why you don't simply P.M. the questions?

I can do that, it's a bit awkward for practical reasons. Once you received the Informed Consent document, you will know me, my university, and can verify that the study is legit.

I'm sending out the study description/info this week if anyone else is interested...

Thanks, Orbit.

It turns out though that I don't really qualify for the study.  They're looking for practicing pagans, and I am not that.  It was worth a try though.

It's actually not about practice, it's about if you self-identify as neopagan

Wow, one thing coming out of the interviews is that some pagans are suspicious of atheists---we just can't win! But the interviews are going well.

The more "evangelical atheists" can be very dismissive of and manifest derision for any form of spirituality.  I've witnessed such myself.  Is that the source of the suspicion?  Or does it seem to be simply a distrust of those who see the world differently - little different to the suspicion you might find from Christian believers?

It seems to be coming from their perceptions of "media atheists" like Dawkins.

Some of the practical issues coming up are very interesting, especially those for pagans in the military--what goes on your dog tags, your grave marker etc, mandatory Christian chapel during boot camp...
