Roz
It's a nice late Saturday morning here in MI. The family all got together a few months ago and we were going to take a vacation to the UP. Fantastic, it's labor day wknd. The original trip schedule was to go early morning Sunday and come back Monday evening. Perfect. Nice vacation all planned out. Got a call from the fam last night. Hi Roz, we're planning on leaving Saturday around noon. (what...?) They know I'm an atheist. I don't give a shit about working on the Sabbath (that's Saturday for the christians). They know I've got a tendency to work OT (I'm one of those lucky bastards who actually like my work environment. My work stress = zero) and they know I've already given my word to my boss that I'll finish up some stuff today. It's Saturday, no one's in the office, I can come and go as I please, it's fucking fantastic! So yeah, now the family's crying cause "I don't want to be with them." Bullshit. You guys knew I would be working, and you advanced the trip 1 day so that I would not be working on the Sabbath. Hate religion.
Ellinas
Well, I have to say that, family or not, when people pull a trick like that for their own ends, my immediate reaction is to dig in my heels, refuse point blank to accommodate them and remember the event for the future so as to make sure I never again agree to their plans. The answer to the manipulative is to be intransigent.

Perhaps it has nothing to do with religion at all and you are simply reading religion into it. Of course, you could drive up in a separate car on Sunday according to the original schedule. Roz
It's got religion painted on it. SDA religion. Working on the 'holy sabbath' day when it's not for the lord (IE healthcare or other emergency jobs) is one of the biggest no-no's in Adventism. They know I've been earning more ever since I no longer pay tithe/offering and work OT on yeshitwa's holy day. The night before they suddenly change things up so I can't ride with all the rest of the family on our road trip? That I have to ride alone tomorrow? Yeah, no... they knew this and planned it out. ◊ crazyguy123 ◊
Roz, I say fuck em'. Why would you want to go on a trip with a bunch of lying assholes anyway? That doesn't sound like vacation; that sounds like stressful work.

sparklingphoenix
My family does stuff like this too. It's not necessarily because of religion though. I have an illness and let them know specifically what I can handle regarding traveling and they always change the plan at the last minute to suit their needs. I've refused to go with my mom to visit my grandparents recently because I don't want to deal with it. Sorry your family has been so manipulative and inconsiderate. antix
After I lost my faith, my morals did not change at all, but I did notice too many Christians with dubious morals. Especially the ones who feel you have to have 39 different guns to blow away an intruder, too many chistians and serious sexual immorality, and specifically this one (and I point it out to xians): Do not be a slave to the lender. No one likes to hear they need to scale back, but I point out the Bible says so, so why don't you follow it?
ExCBooster
Those jerks. I hope you did something fun on Sunday, just to get your own. I'm inclined to agree with Ellinas, and say to dig your heels in next time. If you think it really is them being concerned about working on the Sabbath, you can always troll 'em by asking how they're really sure that Saturday isn't the Sabbath? Roz
Sweet sweet overtime for saturday and sunday, and the best part is that there's no longer a god tax. A few weeks ago it was all confirmed to go early sunday morning and come back late today. Instead of spending my time in a very awkward family situation I got more shit done in the office and a thumbs up from the boss. It was a shitty christian move they've done, but I just gained in the end.

My mom's side is from the UP so I go there every summer. It's very relaxing to be away from crowded areas. Have a nice vacation, try not to let the christians bother you too much. Roz
Gall: Hmmm, I guess I hate religion like I hate the tenets of Nazism. If we're restricting it to people then I hate the preachers and lay persons who propagate the ideals. Lucynia: Nope, never went. Worked OT instead and felt good not paying tithe out of it.
