Goodbye Jesus

I Knew It

One Christian I still keep in touch with has gone over the deep end. I talked to him 20 minutes ago and mentioned his wife and daughter might like Freeport Bahamas because it was not to pricey and there are cool things to do and he replied he cannot afford it (even after 70k in windfalls this yr). I replied "are you tithing to your church" and said yes and I said that is nuts. Take half of that and take your family somewhere cool and he became a little riled. He then replied if the churches go under, then we collapse as a nation and become like Europe and I said most of western Europe (meaning Germany, Holland, UK and the Scandanavian countries are doing pretty well) and he became more riled saying they are ripe for a muslim takeover.  I give up.

There is no polite way to tell somebody that they have devoted their life to foolishness.

Funny thing, is I knew he was tithing. When he full his full (and his family's) free time to this church. It is like every single thing revolves around this church and I do say things, I try to be semi polite but now I just say that is crazy.

Oh no, the evils of secularism are going to eat us all!

What we will do without the Lard?

Churches should pay taxes and then things would change.

Isn't being in your 50s a little late to be brainwashed?

His 50s?--No, it's not. It's all he's ever known, and he thinks it's true. He lives in the Land of Irrational Belief.

That depends. Was he brought up from childhood in Christian indoctrination and Christian view of reality? The brainwashing does not wear off by itself, but the god-virus mutates and strengthens with time. Did he become a Christian as an adult? The voluntary brainwashing could be even stronger, since he has more invested as an adult: family of his own, lifestyle, vocation, property and other resources -- and most importantly, his adult self-identity, which is who he really believes he is because that's who he has become. The god in the psyche has many and varied self-preservation devices to utilize. And money is a powerful catalyst, and the goal seems vital: He's investing in eternity.

And according to the classic sociological book "When Prophecy Fails" that is exactly what happens. They invest in eternity and it feels like diminished returns to let go, so they cling to irrational belief--because they can't psychologically process that they have spent their time and money in vain.

If that were to happen, the economic and social and political landscape in America (or wherever) could change very rapidly. But what federal government scenario would be required to make it happen?

This is why everyone should join American Atheists--they fight the legal battles for this kind of stuff.

I was a Christian first and he became one (thanks to me to some extent) in his late 30s, but was never too strong or overboard. Then about a yr ago I noticed him say we are going to church again, then it became sunday night Bible study and then he joined the church board and now tithing. UGH!    Also, even though I am fiscally conservative, he is overboard: he has to follow Glenn Beck, His minister, Drudge etc. Everything he does is overboard and he preps.

Try having folks a few year away from 65 paying regular payments of ~600 / month and they're worrying about retirement.  Religion's fucks with one's mind no matter how educated or wise they are.

Yup. Making a tithe and not having enough for retirement is idiotic.

The nation already collapsed.

He's still living in a fairy tale.

Probably would be best that he didnt find out that God gave me a personal vision last night and told me to tell him to give me a portion of that 70k?

I'm not 100% sure how this would come about. I'll do some research and perhaps start another thread sometime devoted to the topic of church taxation. wink.png
