pantheory
Cool, an even larger supercluster: "As I recall: Earth, the Orion Arm, the Milky Way, the Local Group, the Virgo Cluster, the Virgo Supercluster, and now the Laniakea Supercluster. Onyx
Makes you wish for a trip in the superclusters, eh? The next trend in sci fi I reckon would be intercluster civilisations stories. Congrats to the scientific team who discovered this incredible home address btw!
pantheory
Perhaps the Cosmos is a self-maintaining, self-sustaining, self-renewing perpetual motion organism. I expect you are correct concerning the observable universe, but that is not what the Big Bang proposes, as you probably know.
gall
http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/laniakea-home-supercluster-09032014/ Would love to see it from the outside like that someday. I know I will never get that chance in this body. I do love to dream though and with such a large universe our dreams can be endless.
bornagainathiest
A few days into my vacation I eventually 'got' the joke involved in the naming of this new discovery. Laniakea means, 'Immeasurable Heaven' in the Hawaiians native tongue. But the astronomers involved had to precisely measure the positions, velocities and directions of 8,000 galaxies to discover the full extent of the super-cluster we inhabit. . . . I suppose 'Measured Heaven' doesn't have quite the same ring to it?
