Popular Post bfuddled
So tonite my two oldest daughters (8 & 11) were cleaning up from dinner, when my youngest started to ask questions about God. They were basic questions (where is god, what does he look like, etc), and we discussed what Christians believe, as well as some of the other religions. My oldest mentioned something about Hell (in reference to the fact that SOME people believe in it), and the younger daughter asked what it was. My oldest daughter replied, "Some people think that if you don't believe in God that he sends you to hell, kind of like at school, when a bully tells you that you better give him your lunch money, or he's going to beat you up." I have had conversations with my oldest about how *I* don't believe in hell, and that she should never believe something out of fear or because she "has to", but I've never specifically used that analogy/description with her. I asked her where she had heard that, and she said that she didn't hear it anywhere, it's just how the situation seems to her. I told her that I agree 100%. I tried not to be too excited, but part of me was jumping up and down that she "gets" it so clearly. It eases my mind that she's come to that conclusion on her own, and seems totally comfortable in it. Yay for kids thinking for themselves!

Thrive
That's great bfuddled. Not only was she able to think critically on her own, but she was able to find a clear way to explain it to her youger sister. Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job raising them both!
Lilith666
Yay, indeed! I told my niece (age 12) a summary of the bible in about 30 minutes. One thing she said in response is that Yahweh hates humans because he can't have what we have. He wants to be human and he can't, so he takes out his anger and disappointment on people. My niece is growing up in a nonreligious household. bfuddled, I'm happy for you and your kids being freethinkers. Human I like that humanist perspective about God's vindictiveness.
seven77
Do bullies still steal lunch money? I thought that was dead trope, honestly. Or at least retired, lol. Hell, even back when I was in School in the late 90s/early 00s, parents were paying with checks. Nowadays, my local district has direct deposit and a prepaid card swipe option. I guess kids could steal someone else's card, but it is useless without a pin code. Most parents just do direct deposit bc it is easier and more secure. At any rate, the story was a good one. Inspiring even. I now have hope for the future....until I can see the bottom of my coffee cup. Then I lose all hope and start thinking of a robot apocalypse led by the progeny of our futures. Leo
Bfuddled, that's great! Many of us have kids that we didn't always challenge in all the way that we should have about these things. You're to be commended. And I liked your post too, Human. Both are apt and accurate descriptions of the situation.
