Goodbye Jesus

Breaking Free - My De-Conversion

Hi all! I'm new. A few people in chat were asking about my de-conversion story, and I have it on this other blog. So rather than copy/paste it here, I figured I'd just link you to the livejournal post. I broke it into 5 shorter parts to make it easier to digest. I'll link them all individually here, but you can just go to the first one and follow the internal links there as well

Part 1: Got no testimony - http://3sigmaanomaly.livejournal.com/2985.html

Part 2: Jesus is no my boyfriend - http://3sigmaanomaly.livejournal.com/3089.html

Part 3: Firefly - http://3sigmaanomaly.livejournal.com/3383.html

Part 4: Depressed by heaven - http://3sigmaanomaly.livejournal.com/3631.html

Part 5: Breaking free - http://3sigmaanomaly.livejournal.com/4072.html

I look forward to chatting with you all.

Cheers

Welcome, 3!  It's great to have you here.

Hearing that you are an astrophysicist reminded me of this:  http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/lego-launches-female-scientist-set-months-after-7yearold-requested-they-make-more-lego-girl-people-and-let-them-go-on-adventures-9650341.html

Welcome 3σ.  We have another astrophysicist here by the name of Bhim.  I’m sure he’ll be glad to have some company.

Greetings, and congratulations on breaking free!

I personally identified a lot with these quotes:

I studied apologetics so that I’d have all the answers, but I had never had the questions, so every response was canned

Suddenly, all those apologetics questions came back, but now they were my questions. I wanted real answers, and since I knew the “church” answers already, I knew they were not good enough.

I spent years studying the Bible (through the lens of indoctrination) and reading apologetics arguments. Most of the apologetics arguments seemed iron-clad at the time, because I also was reading answers to questions I didn't have yet. The canned answers fit well with my brainwashing, and the few that didn't were only representative of different doctrinal viewpoints. I was simply trying to learn in order to have answers for others, not because I needed answers myself. So, once I finally did start having questions several years later, I then started to see how flimsy and empty the vast majority of apologetics arguments are. It now blows my mind that I couldn't see through the nonsense sooner, but I was extremely heavily indoctrinated.

Enough about me, though. Thanks for sharing your story. Good luck with everything, and enjoy the journey ahead of you....

Indeed, BAA and I could surely use more company. Good to meet you 3 sigma. Your user name reminds me of several near detections I've made. :)

BAA is an enthusiastic amateur astronomer, not an astrophysicist!

But he welcomes you in the name of the LHC, the CMB, and Comet 76P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko!  LeslieWave.gif

Hi, 3sig, welcome from me, too.  I appreciated your extimony.  Related to a lot of it!  I'm glad that you managed to avoid having Jesus as your boyfriend.
