midniterider
From the article: The organization may seem to count even less when you consider something Gingerich revealed during his arguments. He was there for the 2006 IAU vote, which came when most of the attendees had already gone home. Just 424 of the organization’s nearly 10,000 members were present, and when the organizers offered the gathering the chance to reconsider Pluto’s demotion, Gingerich said, “they voted not to vote again because they wanted to go to lunch, so that was the end of it.” lol. The scientific method: Lets vote on it. Then go to lunch. Hurry up, I'm hungry. :-)
Thurisaz
Having a clear definition is nice but I wonder whether Pluto (or any other object that far out) is worth all the brouhaha before whenever it will be that we'll actually send more than the occasional probe out there. Deva
Pluto has a special significance. It was named for the god of the underworld, right? It MUST be a planet. I never believed it was otherwise.
mwc
This is getting silly. First, I had to memorize all those planets. Then I had to figure out how to forget just the last one. Now I have to memorize it again? Stop the madness. mwc

You now have to memorize: Mercury Venus Earth Mars Ceres Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto Haumea Makemake Eris Sedna And as we discover more the list will grow. pantheory
Only Pluto will be allowed to stay in the Solar System planet club for now. The other dwarf planets have not been "nominated" for entry into the club since they lack popular support. There will be a lot of interest again in Pluto in July of next year when New Horizons makes a close fly-by. We hopefully will take our best pictures ever and hopefully learn a lot of new cool stuff about it, its relatively large moon Charon, and its four smaller known moons. It must be heavenly (but cold) "up there," billions of miles "above" the fiery firmaments of hell and the sun.
gall
Does that mean our sun has hundreds of planets? Or is it thousands? The planet Eris: it has hundreds or thousands or millions of satalites in the star system but only some are classified as planet. I think they should just teach the school kids that bitched about what a dwarf planet is rather than suck up time I can't believe they have nothing better to report but at least it isn't about terrorism or more violence. Thurisaz
Yeah most of it (I guess) is just people fighting for what they're used to thinking. Grew up being taught "Pluto's a planet", the experts finally come up with a definition that happens to exclude Pluto, some of those people act as if those experts just looted their retirement funds. It would be laughable if it didn't involve unneeded misery for some real people.

Then they would appear in video games, movies, graphic novels, and take on mythical, godlike qualities... oh... If someone can memorize random pro ballplayer statistics, they can memorize the planets. :-) Though memorizing either of these things is not that important.
