If you happen to get there in time for the fly-by, you should probably wear a rubber suit in case you get pelted with debris.

This is so cool BAA. Last night I watched the 3 hour movie called, ''The Right Stuff' (from the 80's) about the very first astronauts and I am so happy to have been born in the era to see all this stuff. I wish so much I had taken a bigger interest in this when I was younger because now I can't watch enough documentaries on the evolution of mankind including this reading about this about Mars in this thread!! The universe, the planets... just all sooooooo amazing!!

The actual title is, 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Continuum' hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson. The entire series is available on Netflix (streaming) or on disc at any major retail store like Target, Wal-Mart etc... .

Also on Netflix (also hosted by Mr. Tyson) is a mini-series titled, 'The Inexplicable Universe with Neil Degrasse Tyson'. It is like a cheaper version of 'Cosmos' but nevertheless just as (if not more) interesting.

Sorry for the derail, BAA. But I'm almost positive you'd agree this is a worthy cause for a derail. :-)

Not a derailment, Fwee!

More like temporarily shunting a few cars off to the side, before re-coupling them and carrying on up the track.

Casey Jones!!!  Where are you?

Hmmm... a bit of a disappointment.

Not unlike the tale of Comet Ison.  Plenty of media hype, but little actual substance.  sad.png

Never mind!

As partial compensation, here's a nice astro link for the attention and delectation of Margee and Fweethawt.

And if you want something (about the size of things in our tiny little galaxy) to blow your mind... take a look at this.

Pillars_of_Creation.jpg

Please click on the image to bring it up to full size and then zero in on the spur of dark cloud projecting out from left-hand pillar, just below the 'spikes' of the brightest, pinkish-white star.  Do you see a dark 'stalk' that's back-lit against a patch of yellow, ending with a bright blob of white?

That blob, my friends ...is an E.G.G.

So the above image can be thought of as a kind of astronomical 'ultra-sound' scan of an unborn solar system.

Our Sun and all of it's planets, moons, asteroids and comets started out in much the same way as this newcomer.  To give you a sense of the scale, please think about the two Voyager probes, launched in 1977.

The blob is calculated to be about twice the size of our solar system.

Which means that if our Sun were in the center of the blob, Voyager 1 would still be inside it, even after having traveled for thirty-seven (37) years at over 38,000 mph!

Hubble pics always blow me away.

And I don't even need the size comparisons for them to work like that...
