The 10 Commandments Of Logic - Posted By A Xian

Inexplicably, a xian relative of mine posted this on FB:

What are some things I can post in response to this?

OK, cool.

In #7 it's "ad ignorantiam"

Some people who write about rhetoric say that in certain contexts, some of these aren't fallacies.  For example, in a courtroom it may be legitimate for an attorney to attack the character of a witness on the stand, if that person's character includes a tendency to make false statements.  Etc.

But overall, good explanations.

I hope the person didn't go on to say that the validity of logic depends on God and without God we can't know anything.

How about this, FTNZ?

Ask your Xian relative to make a logical and valid argument for the truth of Christianity, abiding by these 10 commandments.

I.e., practice what you preach.

That is a good idea.  I am not out to this person, so asking for this would take a lot of courage on my part.

Maybe there is a less scary option, like asking for a logical and valid argument for the truth of the creation story, abiding by these 10 commandments.  Bear in mind, this person probably has no idea of the implications of these commandments.  No experience with logic or debate, or even with xian apologetics.  I have seen posts from her before about creationism and evolution.

Then perhaps you shouldn't follow my suggestion, FTNZ.

Let sleeping creationists lie, so to speak.

Hmmm... "creationists lie?"   Many a true word spoken in jest.  wink.png

#6 is the real gem here.

What is "true" Christianity but a series of false dichotomies?

Sin or Forgiveness?

God or Satan?

Eternal Life or Burning in Hell?

Truth or Lies?

Etc,....

Humans have a strong desire for black-and-white dualism. Sometimes we have to insert that way of thinking beyond where it belongs, IMHO. Most believers aren't willing to venture outside of their false dichotomy-a-verse. They are saved. Those that aren't, are going to Hell.

I don't know what you could say to this person that wouldn't be offensive to her or potentially outing of your non-belief. Probably best to let it go, tbh.

By and large, just because one has religious beliefs doesn't have to mean that she throws all reason out the window (and right into the open sewer manhole locaed there). I'll take it though (especially keeping in mind another recent post from FTNZ) that this family is... ahem... quite hardcore in its morontheism, and as such, yeah it's kind of "funny" how one can post such an image and still adhere to... oh well. When all else fails, I'll just call it Doublethink. That one always fits. :fdevil:

I would be prepared to come out as a nonbeliever if I could swiftly show how it is the logical position and belief is the illogical one.  I am satisfied that this is true and I am almost ready to come out.  Perhaps planning it out is a better option that trying seize opportunities like this one.

Yes, my family is hardcore, you got that right.
