Aiyana
Those of you who have read Philip Pullman's trilogy: Do you think I ought to read it? Is it worth my time? I don't have a ton of time to dedicate to reading, with four kids, and I very rarely read fiction anymore, it requires such a commitment. But I think these books MAY be ones that I consider worthwhile. I do love the fantasy genre (LOTR, Narnia, etc.) Opinions?
BrotherJosh
One of the best book series to come along in a long time, in my opinion. Well worth it.
Deva
I read it some time ago. I thought it was very good and for some reason I read it pretty quickly and straight through. I think anyone would like it who enjoys fantasy stories.
Super Moderator buffettphan Posted October 26, 2014 Super Moderator Share Posted October 26, 2014 I read them a while back and enjoyed them. Much better than the movie with Nicole Kidman in my opinion. (But also IMO, books are almost always better than the movie.)

seven77
Late to the thread, but I would recommend reading book one and sitting on it for awhile. I love "His Dark Materials", but really, "The Golden Compass" is the best of the series by a long, long shot, imho. "The Subtle Knife" is good, but I don't like Will as much as I like Lyra and found the last third or so of the book hard to sit through. "The Amber Spyglass" is my least favorite of the series and I think that is because Pullman is very heavy-handed and a bit hamfisted with his premise in that book. Basically, it is a very obvious parallel with a portion of the Bible and I just can't with it these days. Verdict: "The Golden Compass" is awesome. I'd read it for myself and then aloud to my kids if I had any. The other two, I'd read for fun to myself.
