Goodbye Jesus

What Christian Song Are You Lis... Er, Being Forced To Endure?

This Nigerian song is a massive hit in the Virgin Islands. It's a catchy tune, notwithstanding its reliance on a non-existent imaginary friend to derive one's self-worth.

Unfortunately, it also seems to be the theme song for One Voice Virgin Islands, an organization whose only, sole, single, and entire raison d'être is to prevent gay marriage, and they play it loudly during their marches. Of course, the only argument they have is “God sez so.” And they don't even quote Leviticus or St. Paul! They prefer to shout from that story with the talking snake and expect people to take them seriously. (Have they even read their holey book?) They appear not to understand that freedom of religion applies to everyone, not just them, and they have no concept of separation of church and state. I mean it. They have no concept whatsoever. (FYI, we are subject to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.) The association leaves a bad taste in my mouth whenever I hear this song.

Three of my Facebook friends appear to be with this group, but I have yet to see anyone from my former parish at their marches. I think the Catholics on this island understand separation of church and state, at least in principle.

The good news is that the marchers are dwindling in number and that we get a lot of car honks for our counterprotests. The U.S. Virgin Islands seems ready for marriage equality, even if we don't show it on the surface.

I still like some Christian music for the music itself rather than the message, but I rarely listen to it anymore. A favorite band back in my fundie days was Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart. I still love the 80's Rock music, though I no longer believe or agree with the message.

Christian Rap.  Dear Christians!  NO!  It always ends up feeling like a hyped up nursery rhyme.  Because if I'm going through the trouble of listening to a rap song it had better have some "ho's" and "bitches" and "fuck yous" and all the works.

Lol Rach. I feel you on that one. Christian Rap is cringeworthy at best. The only Christian artist that kinda breaks those parallels is LeCrae and even some of his songs can be awkwardly cringe. Like his "I'm Turnt" song

Hell(lol) If Yall really want to see something funny go look at the comments on both LeCrae's "I'm turnt" music video and his "Team backpack cypher freestyle". You'll see a whole bunch of bible thumpers arguing with each other and even coming at LeCrae asking to pray for him, etc, for being around sinners. They can't even get along with each other.

For me, being around the Black Church, mostly hip-hop gospel with some R&B persuasion was always blaring from the speakers at church. A few years ago, that Marvin Sapp song "Never Would Have Made It" was literally everywhere, even on secular radio stations, but that never really came to a shock to me.

"Never Would Have Made It"-

When my mom calls her sister, who is my religious aunt, her ringback tone is that "Our God Is Greater" song by Chris Tomlin. Not gonna lie, I used to like Chris Tomlin when I was a Christian. Now whenever I hear it, I'm just like "this song is so arrogant"

Our God is greater

Our God is stronger...

Our God is healer, Our God! Our God! OUR God!!!!!

You know what I mean?

By the way, how can I post a video from YouTube without using the link button?

I am so glad you picked up on that!  I picked right up on that too!  Hear that song a lot on the radio and others so like it.  OUR god!!  OUR god is more awesome than yours, motherf/cker.  When I was a church attender they'd make us sing these songs about our god being better than any other and also we had to sing as loud as possible so that the "outside" world might hear us.  We are storming your eardrums, outside world, so that you'll know that we- ahem, I meant, uh, our god- is better than you.

Why are you being forced to listen to this garbage? It's nothing but secular music with jesus name put somewhere in it. However, the one song i refuse to listen to would be "amazing grace". I guess that would be a hymn.

Agreed. My brother loves Lecrae. He won't just play his music quietly, he'll blast it. I'm not a huge fan of rap as it is, it just makes it even worse when it's all about Jesus. Otherwise typical CCM or worship music (i.e. Hillsong) gets played at my family's house on a regular basis and it drives me nuts. The only Christian music I'll play because I like it is Relient K, and even then I won't play much of their really early stuff because the lyrics make me cringe.

None anymore. I used to play it constantly. I remember torturing an electrician that came to fix a problem. I was playing something like "Lord I lift your name on high". The guy was just cringing and sighing. He wanted so much to be somewhere else. Now I understand...

Well, Remembrance Day is next Tuesday and I'm in a band that's playing for a memorial service at a Legion.  Currently I have "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," "O God Our Help in Ages Past," "Amazing Grace" and "Abide With Me" rattling around in My brain at random intervals.

And we're starting to rehearse the Christmas music too, which fortunately has a few non-religious classics like Sleigh Ride and a medley from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

(Springy G cues up 4'33" by John Cage to get a few minutes of peace and quiet)

I cringed as soon as i saw that song title. I think jesus has been lifted high enough. Maybe that's why the delay in judgement day, we lifted that loon so high he can't figure out how to get back down! woohoo.gif

I still have all this Christian Music in my iTunes because I can't bring myself to delete something I paid so much for. Unfortunately, his means I can't just do a random-all play. I did the math and it constitutes 60% of my music collection. I need some new music.

Since I've been out of church for a while, I haven't actually had to listen to any. The ones that I was forced to listen to were the typical, nauseating hymns that you hear in most churches.

Lord I lift your name on high, Lord I love to sing your praises.  Now that one's painful.  Be sure to add the hand motions though for extra torment.

Did you ever have that experience in church when you come to the end of the song, the music director would be like, let's sing that last line one more time, then again, then now the women sing that last line, now the men. unholy fu*king sh*t, that annoyed me.

It just occurred to me that it may be supremely ironic that an anti-gay organization features a song entitled “I know who I am.” There are almost certainly some self-loathing, self-closeted gays in that organization. Do they know who they are?

It makes you want to say, "No! No more, please! I've had enough and if I take in any more, I'll vomit!"

Yes! One music leader would also stop the song and say "Let's just read the next verse out loud"... I suppose that was to really make us think about it, but it was always awkward. He's also clap on the 1 and 3 instead of the 2 and 4. He also told a group of black singers that they had rhythm, unlike us... Oy.

What do you guys think about the people that lift their hands up in the air/ start swaying?  Are they feeling something or is it just their way of showing off how closer to god they are?

Who knows lol Never did that and was always skeptical of it all. The one that gets me the most is at concerts, where many get on there knees and start praising during a song. Some are even crying...I'm just like, "uhhhhhhhh"

Isn't that new theme song for Joel Olsten's program on Sirrus?

While I have never attended Church here's a song I don't mind listening to after six days of working....LINK

I think more often than not, they don't feel anything. It seems like many of them do it just because the others in the congregation are doing it; that was certainly the case with me. I previously went to a Pentecostal church that was big into that stuff and I remember times when the worship leader will tell everyone to hold their hands up so to show devotion to God or whatever. So I think it's largely out of obligation.
