Goodbye Jesus

A New Stomach

My mom has recently forced another miracle story down my throat. This one is about a personal friend of hers whose stomach was removed. Allegedly, a series of tissues began to fold up and act like a stomach. What's really going on? What is the science behind this alleged miracle?

Clearly, you do not have enough information to give us a good enough story to make any definitive statements. However, a common technique that is performed in the setting of a gastrectomy is a technique known as a Roux en Y procedure. This involves anastomoses of the oesophagus with the small intestine. In this case it is not uncommon to see some adaptive changes occur in the small intestine where it will pouch out a bit and act somewhat like a stomach. This is not uncommon and certainly not a unique finding.

Okay, so that's the scientific explanation.

If it were a real miracle, a brand-spanking-new stomach would show up where the old one used to be, all healthy and fully functioning.  None of this totally non-miraculous "tissues pretending to be a pseudo semi-functioning stomach" crap.

So some doctors just came along and removed this persons stomach and then intended for them to what?  Just up and die without it?  Or did they maybe, just maybe, have some sort of plan that went exactly how this went?  Or were they really counting on a miracle?

What really makes sense here?  The stomach removal then leaving them to die, or expecting a takeover of function by the other organs or a miracle?  The first and last options don't really require doctors to get involved.

I can't verify it, but I used to know someone that had an extra artery or partial vein system form a natural bypass around a faulty section.

Don't know if that's possible. But that person wasn't going out of there way to claim god did it or anything. She was just amazed and thankful that it happened.

Your mother is ignorant of the relevant medical science (more likely she is willfully ignorant).  Fortunately, you are not following in her footsteps.
