A Part Of Me Feels Sorry For Famous Actors

OK, so they may get paid millions of dollars and go to fancy red carpets events but...........

They cannot go any where with freedom.

They have next to no privacy. David Beckham (OK not an actor, but you get the gist) has stated he can never go to the local pub and with friends and chill out, he can never go shopping without a large entourage to protect him. He has to live his life with the curtains drawn because the press camp in trees near his property.

A friend of "Arnies" once remarked that the Austrian Oak couldn't go any where without being mobbed yet in the 60's (before movie fame) how much he had loved just goofing around on the beach.

Kenneth Williams (the well known Carry on star) bemoaned the constant calling out to him on the street (Kenny had star recognition without star pay) It drove him to despair and his often just hid in his two room flat. A friend was out with him once and marvelled at how he could stand being yelled out and hounded for autographs all the time. The truth was  (as written in his diary) that Williams could not stand it at all. Movie fame means a permanent loss of your privacy.

The UK actor Alan Davies (not world famous admittedly) has complained that you dream of being famous , yet when it happens you realise that it will never go away and  you can never have your privacy again

It would drive me spare, no wonder so many of them have had drink and drug problems

There's a great quote by Bill Murray, who said something along the lines off, " people want to be rich and famous, try just being rich and see if that doesn't cover it."

I couldn't stand it myself. As 'gabby' as I am and out-going as I can be, I am the biggest hermit in the world. I have a very quiet side to myself that would be totally destroyed by too much exposure. I got to agree with Bill...''want the money but not the 'famous''.

There is no part of me whatsoever that wants to be famous. Not even locally, not even a little bit. I'd take the being poor part that comes with being anonymous over the fame that comes with being rich.

Although I guess if you're rich enough, you could figure out a way to get some privacy. I don't think living in LA or NYC and trying to go to the neighborhood bar without being bothered is ever gonna happen. I wouldn't say I feel sorry for them, but I don't envy them for their lack of privacy.

What the famous lack is anonymity. Anonymity is what we all need at times. Just to go to the store and be a nobody can be a great gift. We can dress how we please and not shave or fix our hair perfectly and no one really gives a damn.

Personally, I don't feel too sorry for the famous because most of them seek fame. Who I feel sorry for are those who do not seek fame but it is thrust upon them. They are true victims.

I would guess they seek fame without fully realising what a dreadful burden it will be. Its not like they can be famous, decide that fame is not for them and then go back to be anonymous. Its a one way ticket they are totally stuck with. Never being able to go out for a quiet walk round the park. There was a video on you tube, showing the actor Jensen Ackles (from  Supernatural)  walking with his wife and being given an "on the spot" interview. It looked they they just saw him walking along and grabbed him. He was polite enough but he looked a bit pissed.

I have less sympathy for the children of actors who when they grow up decide to be actors themselves, they must be well aware, through Mummy or daddy what sort of life it is.

There is one actor I can think of who is barely known at all and he loves it, Jason Isaac's  who has numerous film and television credits to his name (notably Harry Potter). He has said he can be mobbed on the red carpet, (where he is expected), yet get the tube home and no one looks at him twice. He is one of the luckier ones.

I once saw a show regarding fame (cannot remember what it was called) Basically the premise was, the program would get a very good look alike couple, say of the Beckhams, surround them with body guards and send them out on the high street to go shopping and film it. Of course the public went ape shit to get close to them even thou it wasn't really them.

Not only do they get hounded for photo's and autographs , they have to live with the fear of stalkers.

To add:

I think actors do have it worse in the fame game. You can be a famous scientist say and not get a fraction of the public attention on the street.

Years ago I was waiting to get a flight home to Blighty from JFK. I got a sense everyone was looking at me. I looked round and people were staring at me (or so I thought) It was a creepy experience until I looked behind me , and standing right behind me was a fairly famous English actor

If fame is so bad I'm surprised so many seek it still. The "reality television" craze exists because so many people seek fame, even if it is embarrassing. Bill Engvall said that it's really cool to get recognized all the time and anyone who says different is lying. I suppose some people are just never happy.

The youtube craze is proof of that.  Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, and youtube gives them that chance.  Will you be the star of the next viral video?

Apparently watching youtube videos of people playing video games while commenting on them is more popular with kids than actually playing the games now.

My sympathy tanks will be long dry before I shed a tear over the lack of privacy for a rich and famous person. If David Beckham wanted more anonymity he'd stop appearing in Armani ads in his underwear.

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm the opposite of most people I guess. I don't even like Facebook because I feel like I'm putting too much out here for the world to see. I don't get the "look at me" craze.

I ran into a local sports commentator at  my grocery once.  I just said, "Hi" as I passed him and he stopped me and went on about sports non-stop.  I was almost offended that he did that.  I can't just say Hi to someone without them acknowledging their status?  He was then surrounded by a bunch of old folks wanting to chat sports with him.  I just laughed and kept walking.  I could tell he was irritated and wanted to get his shopping done, but I think deep down inside, he likes the attention.

I never understood that. These people know what they are getting into when they get into show business and then they complain when they get successful and get all kinds of attention. To be honest, i don't feel sorry for these actors at all. If they cannot handle it, then they should quit and go get a real job. -f*ck em'

You can't quit fame, once you are famous you are stuck with it

Not really. Alot of actors come out of the business and people don't pay attention to them. Child actors would be a fine example. -peace

I've thought of this in the past, and I feel sorry for them also. I would never want the fame and attention they receive. ( I wouldn't mind being rich though tongue.png )

Some look at these famous people and wish to be like them, but they have no idea how these people really feel behind closed doors. Living in the  spotlight brings on a large amount of pressure, not to mention when they get older and want to settle down their family is constantly going to be followed. Once they become famous, there is no going back to normal.

Makes me appreciate my life more, lol.

So one of my closest friends is a well known actress, and she gets followed everywhere. When I am out with her people come up to her all the time, in fact one day I woke up to see a photo of myself with her on a well known celebrity website.... talk about surreal.

So I guess in my situation I am able to experience fame without being famous. It's pretty surreal, that's all I can say. But I wouldn't trade my privacy for fame, some of the crap she has to deal with is unbelievable...

Most movie stars aren't even recognizable without proper hair and makeup. When they don't hang out at high profile places with their entourage and high profile friends the odds of being noticed are nil.

I share a couple of hobbies with some celebrities. We can hang out like regular people. Funny story, though; I provided transportation for the David Copperfield cast when they were taping a TV special in Tampa. On their day off we went to Busch Gardens. It's Florida and 90 degrees, but David wore a black suit and sported some pretty amazing arm candy who was dressed for the red carpet that day. He got the private VIP treatment and nobody else could go on rides or attractions when he was around. He could have passed as a regular guy if he wanted to; I hung out with his double all day and nobody noticed him, though he looks just like David and word was out that the famous magician was there that day. Apparently Copperfield wanted to be noticed but not be bothered with talking to the people who pay his bills.
