Goodbye Jesus

How The Church Left Me

I havent entirely divorced myself from christianity. Nor can I totally go full atheist. I was taught by my parents to take the good with the bad, and mostly ignore the bad if I could. I am still quite comfortable with my faith in something spiritual, even if its somewhat illogical (scientifically). Shcizm and dogma never posed a serious concern with me. To each there own!

I never left the church (Southern Baptist), but the SBC has definitely left me behind. Not only has the organization turn its back on my kind, but has declared those people of my proffession to be "enemies of God, the Church and the American nation".

I am an environmentalist. I work with environmental issues and promote sustainability and environmental awarness. I do this in a professional capacity, have made a successful career out of it and will continue to do so. My ethics and and motivation is to protect and ensure the continued existance of natural places in which I can hunt, fish and just being in the woods.

Yes, I am a treehugger that likes to shoot and eat cute small furry woodland creatures. I killed Bambi's mom, haha, and she was tasty!

I am a treehugger because I can survive and feed my family by working and caring for the land. Therefore I must protect that which supports my family and I. If I make some money from it, all the better. I dont merely do this out of self interest, but of the interest and wellbeing of the community, from local to global.

The Baptist dont like this. Their paranoia, ignorance and greed makes them feel threatened. Their talking heads only serve to push and increase their fears.

That leaves people like me, who geniunely care for their fellow human and natural communities, in a serious situation.

I can't be associated with a group that spiritually, socially and politically  seeks to undermine everything I have learned, observed, worked for and believe in.

Welcome Coyote.  You sound like you hold some of the same values I learned growing up out on the farm.

Welcome.

Not everyone here is atheist.  No-one says you have to be.  Be yourself - and don't let the religious organizations grind you down.

As to environmentalism, I suspect that is an affront to the Christian attitude that man has a god-given dominance over nature and it doesn't matter if it all goes wrong as Jesus will return to sort it out.  It is pure, and frankly evil, irresponsibility.  I am glad that there are those who are prepared to back the environment of the only home we have against these idiots.

I've never understood why so many Christians don't give a rat's ass about the environment. They're not all like that, of course, but a lot are, and it makes no sense. I was a Christian for many years, and I considered the environment to be our responsibility as stewards of God's creation. The Christians who shit all over the environment are completely ignoring this responsibility.

Thanks to all who replied.

My life has been a equal split between agriculture and the military (USAF). Family heritage is split that way too. Farming and firearms come naturally to me. Its in my blood.

Profesionally, I dont mix business with sex, religion or politics ( or Southeastern Conference college football).

The belief that I am a demonic communist sent by the new world order to destroy the church, take away freedom and property, enslave and kill humanity?

WTF?

I have have a mind to run with it and play their right wing fantasy roleplaying game.

Meanwhile, back in the REAL world...............

Coyote: Welcome. With no  disrespect meant to your parents I think their advice to ignore the bad is only partially true, To some extent ignoring the bad is necessary to avoid being bitter and/or angry all the time. But it has a down side. As a world view ignoring the bad causes a person to have a distorted view of the world. One result is to lack empathy. Also, one needs to see the flaws in the world in order to see Xtianity for what it is. As bad as the world is in many areas can one really see a good, omnipotent god in control? As Woody Allan said, "the best that can be said for god is that he is an underachiever." Rip
