212 Reasons To Reject Christianity

This is an updated version of what was posted about 2 months ago. I have added 112 more reasons and changed the word 'doubt' to 'reject' to make it a stronger statement. I think if you consider all 212 reasons together as a package, you have to come to the conclusion that if there is a god, it is definitely not the god of Christianity.  Here is the newest version:

I am sitting here just tripping the fuck out over reason number 16. Seriously. SERIOUSLY. All these people who base their entire lives on "Jesus", when the book about Jesus wasn't even written by Jesus. I don't think I can properly explain the way the absurdity and ridiculousness of this is swirling around my brain right now.

And even more obvious - those books about Jesus weren't even written by people who personally knew him either - unlike what most people have been taught and the various churches continue to teach by giving the improper names (i.e. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)!

Joshua 10:13 – the sun stood still for over a day- consistent with the then-assumed earth-centered universe, but now understood that this would have caused an epic catastrophe over the whole earth.

This is from #61 Fictional Stories.      I clearly remember being a kid (10 or 12 years old) and the church pastor rambling about this story and saying how "Science" has calculated that the number of days we've had was somehow "short" one day and that this was that day.        Past-me was thinking that was one of the dumbest things I'd ever heard, but must be right if the pastor and "Science" were saying it.      Ugh past-me.

If "science" claims we share a common ancestor with monkeys, it's wrong.

If "science" claims the universe is billions of years old, it's wrong.

If "science" claims we are somehow missing a day, it's right.

Basically if science agrees with what the pastor already thinks, then it's right.

This is why scientific discovery doesn't progress faster. Everyone is too busy trying to find evidence that proves themselves right instead of finding where the evidence leads.

Great list!

Re #1: there is even less agreement about the historical Jesus among scholars than the agreements that the Jesus Seminar reached. Much of their work was based on assumptions that are now losing their hold. They used the so-called Criteria of Authenticity to try to distill historical "nuggets" from the gospels. For example, the Criterion of Embarrassment: if something mentioned in the gospels (esp. the Synoptics) would cause difficulties for the early church, it is probably authentic (e.g. Jesus' baptism by John, as though Jesus needed remission of sins).

Now a lot of people in the field have given up the Criteria. Some are trying to use theories about group memories to sift out what is likely to have been remembered accurately from what is likely to have been reworked/embellished/invented. But this memory-theory approach quickly falls into circularity, since the gospels as a whole are clearly pitched to promote faith. They are entirely propaganda. So there isn't an objective basis from which to lift out pieces of fact and shake off the propaganda in which they're encased.

A devastating critique of the whole "get to the historical Jesus" approach is this one by Zeba Crook, who does believe that Jesus existed:

Actually, it's up to 227 now. I love that he keeps adding to it. I think it was in the 90s when he first posted about it.

This list is excellent, I love reading it. Very truthful and honest.

Understandably he has a lot on his plate, but I'd be interested to see some thoughts on other religions- Islam, Scienctology, Mormonism.

Though perhaps, they're not as vast with their errors. Who knows?

Maybe this should be moved or reposted in the lion's den. It would be fascinating to see how the christians in that forum respond to this.

Once he gets to 666 (or 616) reasons, he could stop.
