I'd Be Labelled A Witch

So I'm posting because its one thing to announce to family etc that your not a christian, but has anyone actually become spiritual and then told that to their christian aquantances be it family or friemds??

I'm curious as if I did tell my family what I beleive, I know for a fact that I'd be labelled a witch, especially with my fascination regarding chanelling energy, seeing the future through the psych, tarot cards, and the like.

The stupid thing is, its not harmful, its just a hobby, but most definitely some of it is witchcraft. I dont find it one bit scary and it has absolutely nothing to do with satan. My own mother dabbled in such things before she turned to the bible, yet she would happily label me a witch.

Has anyone else felt like this or even experienced it??

I remember people in my old church denouncing anything they thought was "of the East" or the "occult".  Witchcraft of any type was a definite no-no.  They would have prayer sessions with people about their previous "occult involvement" or if they'd had anything to do with Freemasonry.  (The dear old masons, just a social club and fundraising group).  I was even chastised one day for using the term "fingers crossed" because it implied luck, instead of reliance on the (ever unreliable) sky daddy.

My involvement with Tibetan Buddhism would certainly never be understood by my parents or my brother, so I have not told them. I think they probably suspect something is going on - once my Dad asked me why was I so interested in India - right out of the blue. I cobbled together a half true answer that did not address religion.

Most likely they do know, since my sister in law sees my Facebook posts and I think its pretty obvious from that. I used to get letters from my mother every now and then trying to convert me, so she obviously thinks I am unsaved. I just determined not to discuss religion in any way with them. I can't see any good would come of it.

The same goes for when I was interested in ceremonial magic and the Tarot for a short time.

Hon, I'm so happy I wasn't born 150 years ago because they would have burned me at the stake for growing herbs in my yard. Today all you have to do is listen to secular music and they think the fucking devil has got his teeth in you. I'm soooo happy to be out of all of it. It's a pretty crazy world out there with human beings running it..

When I was a teenager my mom had a friend who thought everything was Satanic--Tarot, Dungeons & Dragons, the Proctor & Gamble logo, you name it. I think the best thing is just to not advertise your interests around those people. It's just not worth the lecture/argument.

I know (albeit online) quite a few self-styled witches.  They are generally very entertaining, intelligent, funny - in some instances have proven themselves trustworthy where that issue has arisen.  There is no shame in being called a witch.

I do not call myself a witch (it is not seen as a gender-specific term in pagan circles), yet have ideas and, occasionally, practices that would certainly be described as "occult" by my Christian acquaintances.  They might be inclined to mangle terminology by accusing me of witchcraft, wizardry or of being a "warlock".  And, were they to do so, I would be likely to fall over laughing.

Personally, I would keep silent concerning such beliefs and practices, at least until such time as stating such matters would make no difference to me, and preferably until I was in a position to enjoy watching the subsequent chaos unfold.  Bide your time.

GypsieMoon, please stay safe.

Wiccans and pagans / witches or whoever, are harmless, yes. But not so those who get into the moral panics against them. There are people I won't admit I'm a secular humanist to either, they already have a narrative about such things. You're likely to be caught in the crossfire: it's not so much about you as it is about them battling imaginary things. By "imaginary", in this case, I mean the components of their narrative which they continue telling and retelling each other about this.

We've talked in chat: you're young. In these situations, the young are particularly vulnerable. Their narrative is likely to be more important to them than your honest answers about what you do and don't do, or do and don't believe. Just ... stay safe, and keep as much distance as you need to in certain unsafe situations, like when they all get together in one of their 'concerned' goon squads.

I'd definitely be labelled a witch, and have claimed that title in the past.  :D

'witch' as a label has so much baggage attached to it though these days.  sigh…  at one time I found it very empowering though!

I don't share my innermost stuff with those I can't trust with it… even family. it's just not worth it.. that's been my experience.
