Goodbye Jesus

Ridiculous Answers From Christians

Probably all of us have asked Christians where's the evidence that your bible is 100% accurate and they often give ridiculous answers that dodge the question like

1. Because the bible says so

2. Because the bible is the only true source in the world.

3. Because I have been born again.

4. Because history and science proved it.

Similar to how we ask other intelligent questions like "why is Christianity the only true religion? ( because the bible says so.) Why would a loving God allow everlasting suffering? ( Because God is righteous and righteousness requires righteous punishment.) Why are religions like Buddhism, the work of evil when it cultivates peace and humility (because we are saved through Faith not good works, Jesus is the only way to heaven.)

Isn't Christianity based on fear? ( no, it's based on love and the teachings of the bible) If God is a forgiving being, why does it take belief for him to forgive? (Because he cannot tolerate sin, just ask for forgiveness and receive Jesus as your Lord and savior) Why is Faith more important than actions rooted in unselfish love and kindness? ( Because we have all fallen short and our good deeds are filthy rags to God) If Faith alone saves, why does the bible say "A person is justified by actions and not by Faith alone? (We are not saved by works but by Faith in Jesus Christ)

Has anyone else had similar responses to questions?

Not only received them, but gave them. We were all motivated to take up the "armor of God" and fight, so we did. We'd tell each other about our struggles with reality versus our beliefs, but to non-believers we'd always present the faith as a glorious wonderful intimate personal relationship with the living GAWWWWD. But we learned to compartmentalize our beliefs and experiences so that we didn't doubt, because doubt pisses off god, and expressing doubt will eventually cause other believers to back away from you or start excluding or condemning, and fitting-in is a very big deal for most humans. So the combination of wanting to fit in and to not lose the big payout of eternal bliss, believers have an intricate web of bullshit disguised as "deep wisdom" to keep their brains from seeing that the emperor has no clothes on, nor is there even an emperor.

They will also sometimes add:

5.  "It's ok to have doubts.  Everybody has doubts sometimes."  But then they still don't answer the question or make any other reasonable reply.

I'm reminded of Peter Boghossian's book, A Manual For Creating Atheists. Therein, he says that arguing logic with a Christian is a waste of time. The only effective approach, he writes, is to subtly challenge the thought process behind their positions. When interacting with a Christian, he steps back from the topic of religion and asks such questions as, "How do you define reality?" or, "It it possible for some people to misconstrue reality?" He explains that he is just trying to gain a better understanding of what they are saying.

Thus the Christian isn't being challenged, but is being led toward thinking about how to discern reality from the unreal. With care, the Christian can sometimes be led toward a definition of reality that then reveals the flaws in his or her belief system. But Boghossian doesn't hammer them with the distinction between reality and religion, which just raises defenses, but lets them discover that for themselves. He also writes that such an approach isn't always successful, but he thinks it is perhaps the best way to get past the built-in defense mechanisms of Christianity.

It's all an interesting approach, and I'm looking forward to a chance to try it.

"Prayer fails because you don't have enough faith"

"God is mysterious and distant because He wants you to have faith"

"God doesn't want you to know until after you die because faith is more important than knowledge"
