Popular Post Castiel233
I think the Christian faith causes a tremendous amount of harm and prevents people from taking sensible steps to protect themselves. Cases in point: A man beats his wife, the family urges her to leave the brute, but she can't, because Jesus expects her to submit to her husband in all things. A man gets sick, he needs urgent medical help, but knows the Bible recommends the anointing of oils for healing and disproves of doctors. He gets anointed and dies. He was the only bread winner and the family lose their home A family find out their son is gay. They bombard him to turn away from sin, force him to have conversion therapy and pray over him nighty for Satan to release him. The son kills himself under the pressure. Then we have the basic insanity at the very heart of this religion. All illness, all suffering and all death is the result of a man and a woman eating enchanted fruit Moving onto to prayer. The hands that help (as Ingersoll put it) are far more helpful than lips that pray. We have a case here in the UK of a 34 year old woman with a severe medical problem. (Her story has been covered in the national press) On face-book she has asked for donations to pay for private treatment. Naturally her FB page has had people "praying for her" and posting "healing pictures of Jesus". What a load of crap, she needs cash, not well wishes and magical thinking. If prayer works that why do doctors go to medical school, why are hospitals filled with drugs and so forth. Why are patients never cured of things supernaturally. I knew a guy that had a very bad road accident, he broke his back and is in a wheel chair for life. Why can't the "Benny Hinns" of the world heal him, why doesn't Franklyn Graham beseech the Lord to fix such people........... Prayer does not work and for Jesus to say that it does, suggests that he wasn't really the Son of God, but a deluded man at best or a troll that would rival Bugs Bunny. People die from basing their life decisions on the Bible, a book, which often does not conform to reality and was written by authors unknown and in a time we can't be 100 percent sure of. That people devote their lives to this shady stuff is sad enough, but to actually die for it is very grim indeed. If you cannot see/hear/touch Jesus, you are not in a relationship with Him, Thinking happy "Jesus" thoughts and "pointing" them at Him does not make it a relationship anymore than me thinking happy thoughts about Angelina Jolie and "pointing them" at her makes it a relationship. The Bible sells you shadows while you pretend otherwise

Leo
CC, MS and Castiel are making a lot of sense. A relationship with Jesus is the true "LDR" as you see people call it on the Internet. And like many, you get behind the photos and the letters and there's nothing there.

rach
Castiel, not only physical harm but also psychological, moral, and emotional harm. I didn't realize, until long after I left the faith, how much psychological and moral harm the Cross has done to me. It hit me when I saw an image in a Jesus movie that sunk my heart. Bleeding, dying Jesus was on the cross, but we are so accustomed to that image we become immune to it and it looses all effect. There was a man standing to the side of Jesus, wailing, pointing at him, with some of Jesus' blood all over his hand. That is what struck me. It is about blood. Blood is the epicenter of the faith. As humans we intrinsically recoil from blood. We do not like to see it, and if it gets on us, we wash it off. We know it as the symbol of pain and death. Christianity revels in blood. It invites you to step into the bloodbath. It promises great and even fantastical things for those that do. But all it ends up being, is a bloodbath.
GoldenWolf
That is very true. I remember praying for god to take away my mental conditions many times. Of course, he never did. I later realized that he wouldn't ever remove them from me and that I would need to get professional help for them instead. Depending on god for anything is nothing but a waste of time. God is worthless. I can also relate. I prayed to god so much to cure my anxiety and depression - complete waste of my time and a load of BS. The whole blood shedding and murder, the whole religion is repulsive. It even says in the bible that it please god to bruise his son. What kind of sick garbage is this, it pleased god to hurt his son?? -gross
Leo
CC is right. And to add to it, the current narrative states that the normally-available delirium was not available to Jesus, or he was capable of choosing not to use it. Also, Vlad the Impaler and others actualy came up with more gruesome and long-lasting ways to torture people than even crucifixion was. It's been said elsewhere, but: you've already done more than the god has. In fact the god requires that you do more than he has. You've forgiven someone even of the tiniest infraction without requiring a tortured bloody death as restitution.
Castiel233
To add to above posts: The harm that the Christian faith does to the human mind is wicked enough on its own, let alone its historical murder of "witches" and "heretics". Andrea Yates murdered her own children, she planned the murders and carried them out. Was she mentally ill, most certainly, was she very committed to Jesus and the Bible, you bet. I submit that if you take a religion that promises you a ticket after death in which you will be tortured forever, that tells you that you are worthless and sinful and filled with pride. That parrots to you that only accepting the blood death of Jesus can clean you, as long as you really , really believe it and are profoundly grateful. A religion that tells you that you are guilty by birth of a crime committed by someone else. A religion that over and over again tells you to be submissive and humble and ashamed and grateful. That tells you to refer to your God as "master" and "lord" and "king" while calling yourself "slave" and "servant". A religion that tells you that you are being watched day and night by a jealous God who wants you to love and surrender yourself to him. I submit that if you take such a religion and marry up to a person with mental illness, you cannot be surprised if the outcome is misery. Yates of course is an extreme example, but I know five people who have suffered, or are suffering with mental health problems. All are strangers to one another and all share the Christian religion as a common denominator. I think that if you are a Christian and Christianity does not cause you mental suffering, than you do not really understand it, or are closing yourself off to large parts of its teachings, probably on purpose. If people really, really believed that they were going to go to a literal hell than they would not sleep a wink, let alone go to work and raise a family and live a normal life.
