It won't be long and he'll be locked in a compound with his followers having a shootout with law enforcement, or a few years from now he'll be in jail for having molested his followers. Jesus:still inspiring lunatics 2,000 years later. Birds of a feather.... -Cat

So why do they label this guy a cult leader but not the Pope?

What a creepy smile AJ and his wife have.  No matter what is said, they can not wipe those clown smiles off their faces.  When I was a disciple of Jesus Christ I behaved just the way these cult followers are doing.  Most of my mind was somehow turned off.  I never intended to turn off my mind.  I never would have wanted that.  I was convinced that my mind was growing by shutting out everything except Jesus and his word the Bible.  Like these cult followers, I was incredibly emotional, either weeping or wearing a robot smile most of the time.  AJ is not Jesus Christ but they are cut from the same mold.  Their teachings somehow hit that sweet spot inside people's minds that turns them against their own selves.

And there was me thinking that Jesus lived in the hearts of all his people.

Oh well, I suppose Australia must be the promised land...

Jesus of the Bible (if he existed) was going around telling people to trust in him, and the reality he taught, instead of the reality they saw and experienced around them.  This is how our minds get over-ridden.  When we put all our trust in someone else, it doesn't matter anymore what reality, nature, and our intuition are telling us.  We have to bypass our own brains and feelings and "plug in" to the Master.  We have to conjoin our brain with his.  This is the danger of a cult leader.  From that point on, your brain is his, and you are merely a puppet.

This is what Christians are talking about when they say "I am no longer my own, I am bought with a price."  From now on it's all about Him, and I don't matter anymore.  A real leader would inspire people to think for themselves.  Christ never did that, which is why now, we have millions of little Christ-bots.

That's because he doesn't yet have the capability of shielding hundreds (or thousands?) of pedophiles.

I know for a fact that Jesus lives in California.  He does the best tile work I have ever seen.  You could almost call it miraculous.

I have noticed that to. I have noticed pastors especially always seem to have a sickening weirdo smirk on their face. You know what is strange, when i have watched the bio channel in the past and the history channel as well, when they have these shows on serial killers, the serial killers have the same sickening weirdo smirk on their faces. Creepy....

Oh yeah. As I've watched the broadcasts from that Pentecost church, indeed the pastors either are smiling in a weird way all the time, or faking happy tears (and sometimes sad tears too). Funny, or not funny at all actually, how it didn't disturb me as a believer.

I watched the video in full last week. rather disturbing is i may say so. what struck with me is how Mr AJ here tells his followers to give away earthly things and desires, and remove anything not glorifying god/jesus or in this case AJ. he even had a inner circle of followers who in his own words "had given it all away for the cause". is your spouse in line with AJ's teaching, no?, too bad you gotta leave them. I have seen this line of reasoning before in church, but especially in youth camps and programs. (adults at the church were too comfortable already or busy receiving gods blessings). the weaker members of the church like youth and financially insecure are told to sacrifice the most, to really give it all away and keep their eyes on jesus.

I think church and cults are closer cousins than they think.

This is so sad. He's got people in tears at the thought of him all the time. And idk why the soulmate idea even exists anymore. It puts so much pressure on choosing a partner. How sad that this person is ruining 30 year marriages, let alone happy relationships. All this is so unnecessary.

I don't understand why the people are twitching when they get emotional. Nothing has ever made me start twitching like that.

If I'd seen this years ago I would think something supernatural is going on to have people twitching like that.

Do you wonder if he (AJ or jesus) actually believes what he is saying? in the video when the interviewer says your in danger of becoming a cult leader, AJ's smile kinda laughed but i swear for a second his eyes did something different, and he looked away from the interview quickly while responding. I wonder.

Also what about Mary? does she believe some, all or none of what he is saying?

same goes for any cult leader. I know pretty much every church pastor believes what he is preaching, but cults often have quite inventive/creative doctrines/teachings. I wonder if you can convince someone of something you don't believe in yourself (not just a quick 5 second lie, I'm talking about preaching every day/week and preparing recordings and web sermons like AJ was doing).

anyone got opinions?

For pastors who no longer believe or are struggling. It is a secure support group to help them as their whole livelihood and careers are on the line if the don't keep up the facade

I disagree. There are undoubtedly pastors who do believe what they preach, but I guarantee you that there are some who question it, some who are convinced it's not true but feel trapped in the vocation they've chosen, and others who are total charlatans.

Absolutely. Not me personally, because I don't have it in me to be dishonest, but there are definitely people who can convince others of things that they themselves don't believe. It happens all the time.

I think the followers believe he is Jesus. I think AJ himself is aware that he is just a good improvisational actor. I'm unsure about Mary.

Do people sell products they're not completely committed to, in terms of lifestyle, or don't own? Oh, yes, they certainly do.

The thing about preaching is, you're making your living at it. You better believe you'd keep it up, even if you didn't believe. If you'd committed your life and education to a thing, you're too deep in investment to call it quits. If you're a preacher, and suddenly you realize it's not true, and you quit, you're out on the job market with zero marketable skills or experience. Besides, it's a very rare career indeed where you can pass a plate in a room, and people just heap money on you. Aside entirely from the money, consider the volunteer hours, and community support you get. There's no other business in the world that gets that much social support and assistance.
