Goodbye Jesus

Thoughts About Jesus

I posted previously about the unforgivable sin, and people seem to have different thoughts about what it is.

Has anyone had a thought come into their head equating Jesus with the devil or demon?

How do you feel about Jesus as a person now you've deconverted?

Jesus and all other mythological characters are irrelevant in the real world; that is until somebody thinks a character is real and feels the need to prove it to the unbelievers.

Jesus doesn't seem to be real.  Maybe there was a crazy, homeless guy named Joshua but he didn't do

the things mentioned in the gospels.

I'm lazy here and still slogging through Bart Ehrman's works. Can someone give away the ending? Was The Jesus of the bible a true historical person that was crucified by the Romans? Are we left with deciding 1) to believe whether he is God or just a man or 2) that he did not exist at all and the whole story is a fabrication?

No.  The Romans were very good record keepers.  If there had been a Jesus the Romans would have

made note of him.  Instead what we get is the Romans first noticing Christians about a hundred years

after the time of Paul.  That is when the Romans start talking about what Christians believe.

Thank you, MM. Just a quick glance at that link is unexpectedly relieving. I have more work to do!

FYI Bart thinks he did exist. Not that it matters what anyone thinks since we'll never find out.

I don't think the Romans would have made note of him as they crucified a lot of lil uprisings and criminals. I don't think he was that big of a deal without all the 'miracles' added to the stories later. Just a guy and some fish dudes... If he did exist that is

Jesus Ben Sirach was real.  He was a Rabi and his teachings became a type of scripture.  He had a school

in Egypt and later taught in Jerusalem.  The only trouble is that he died about 150 years before Paul.  That

is perfect timing for people to latch onto his name and building all kinds of myths and legends around the name

"Jesus".  But Ben Sirach wasn't executed and Rome didn't control Palestine back then.  Back then religion

was an endless game of "Telephone" where stories got passed around for being popular so the stories

quickly grew and evolved in ways that made them more popular.

How do I feel about Jesus? Well, meh. His "good stuff" is not unique, a lot of it is common sense really, and the stuff that is not so good...well. Blah. I'm sure things didn't go the way described in the bible due to the Broken telephone effect, it most likely was much less dramatic. I wouldn't care if there weren't so many of his followers who spread so much hate, and so many others who take from the poor and give to themselves.

Hebrews 6:4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6 if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. I never thought Jesus was a devil or demon because I know there are no such things. However, the biblical portrayal shows he was often a jerk -- cursing fig trees for acting natural, calling a non-Jewish woman a dog, killing a lot of pigs, promoting the concept of hell, etc., etc. I can do without that kind of "savior."

  • 3 weeks later...

For me, it doesn't really matter if he existed or not because I don't think Jesus was really all that "good." I mean, if he was a god in the flesh, he knew everything... He said things he knew would cause suffering and division in future generations. Hate your family? Seriously? Sell everything you have? Seriously? To what extent? What will I eat? Where will I sleep? In Luke 7 he heals a slave but says nothing about the ownership of one human to another. Here's an opportunity to scrutinize slave ownership but he says nothing...Whether hell is biblical or not, he knew it would be preached that way by the majority and thus many would live in fear and be manipulated due to it. He's silent. He taught people to be victims with the whole "turn the other cheek" thing. He told some peeps he was going to be back before they tasted death. They're dead. Do you think they knew he was speaking in a metaphor? He wasn't lying, it was a metaphor!!! Sketchy Jesus.

The guy was a confusing prick. He wasn't progressive for the time. His ideologies fit that era perfectly. Why? Because he was a product (either real or man-made) of that time.... Reflecting the thinking of the time.

When judging Jesus one needs to judge him as a god. Not a man. As a man, I guess he was okay for that time... But as a god, he totally flubbed his opportunity to impress and convince. Claims of magic will work for some, but his philosophies are what miss the mark for those requiring something that makes Christianity stand out in a sea of religions the world over.

And there's much more... These are just a few items I could think of at the moment.
