My Thoughts On Christian Persecution...

So I'm hoping to have a good discussion here about what many Christians, including my parents, view as impending persecution because of the Supreme Court ruling that legalizes same sex marriage.

The thing is that I can tell them about the various types of marriages that are listed in the Bible, I can talk about history of marriage, even reference same/similar arguments that were made during the legalization of inter-racial marriage, as well as, desegregation, yet they still will not listen. I can even talk to them about Paul's letter to the Roman's ( I think?) that talks about the government's authority and as Christian's they are supposed to follow those laws. In that light, not only are people not sinning, they are actually honoring God by following the law. I remember there being something possibly about conscience but I don't remember and I also don't remember there being anything in the Bible about not following a law because of conscience.

With the above things in mind, how can Christians claim persecution? By discriminating against people, especially those in civil servant positions, these Christians are not only breaking the law but sinning as well. For those that have businesses, there is absolutely no reason to discriminate. The making of a wedding cake, the selling of tools, the catering of a wedding has absolutely nothing to do with faith. I would think that people would take advantage of the pending nuptials and the insane amount of money that same-sex wedding would bring in.

Any thoughts?

You're absolutely right, they have no good reason to object to this law change or to shirk their duties as civil servants or turn customers away.  And they are "sinning" by doing so, as you eloquently stated.

But your parents won't get it, and I don't think there's any point discussing it with them.  I would nod in silence or change the subject, if I were you.

If pressed for a comment, then to my mind the obvious answer is: other people's marriages are none of their business.

That's ok. Let them discriminate and let other people, who do not practice foolish business ethics, rake in the cash. Discrimination helps NO ONE and is very childish. Today i bought another vehicle(i flip cars) and did business with a muslim. Their faith didn't matter to me one little bit. They worked with me, we had a very pleasant transaction, and i will do business with her again.

Ask your parents where do you draw the line with discrimination? Color, Race, Religion, Clothes, Cars? It seems like people who discriminate are looking for a reason to do it. Ask why.

I have yet to hear of any Xtians being persecuted as a result of the SCOTUS decision, but I have heard of gays being assaulted as a reaction to it.

The Bible also says that any child that curseth his parents should be stoned to death. Should Christians be allowed to pick and choose the parts of the Bible they want to follow?

I would say no. If they cherry pick then they aren't being True to their religion, their God or themselves. So, whats the point of religion if you are following it and ignoring the crucial parts? What does it say about a person like that? Sorry xtians. Your religion DICTATES an all or nothing stance, so you either practice all of it or none of it, otherwise you are a critic and lying to yourself.

See I think this is a good. Does anyone know if it says in the Bible that people do not have to follow the law because it goes against religion? I don't think it says that anywhere but rather is something that people kind of cooked up over the years as an excuse not to follow XYZ because they either didn't want to or wanted to be the moral dictators of others rather than living out their own faith in their own lives.

Exactly Eyes. Couldn't have said it better myself. Plus, what complete and utter bullshit that Christians are being persecuted because homosexuals can enjoy the same basic rights as everyone else. I am a happily married heterosexual. The SCOTUS made its ruling. Guess what? I'm still a happily married heterosexual. Isn't it amazing how gay marriage has no effect on me whatsoever?

Hi Zephie. The only thing I can remember offhand is in the Book of Acts, chapter 5, verse 29.  I know there's context and all that, plus arguments could be made on both sides with this verse.

But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men."

That might be what you were referring to.

That's the only thing that I found as well. However, like you said, context is everything there with this verse. Eh, either way, Christians are not being persecuted. They are losing influence in this country and I find that this can only be a good thing. People are welcome to believe what they want but they should not force those beliefs on others.
