Fweethawt
This is an interview between Sam Harris and Megan Phelps, granddaughter of Fred Phelps. There is much about the Phelps family belief system that has been greatly misunderstood and Ms. Phelps goes into detail explaining the mindset of their particular brand of Christianity. This is a very good listen. https://soundcloud.com/samharrisorg/leaving-the-church-a-conversation-with-megan-phelps-roper

HolyGoat
Wow, that was truly fascinating! The thing I found most interesting was how she talked about putting to death their inherent moral urges upon realization that the bible contradicts them. That takes some intense conviction. I think I tried to do that a little bit when I was a teenager, but it didn't hold. Also, the distinction between god's hate and their hate and trying to love others by making them aware of god's hate for them and their actions is such an odd way of seeing it, but makes their actions make more sense. Still horrible and evil things they do, but I can now more or less see how they could get to that place.
Fweethawt
Thank you for listening to that. Yes, fascinating is the perfect way to describe it. She really does explain it in a very clear way that enables the listeners to view the entire Westboro organization a little differently. I wish a lot more people would listen to this. Fweethawt
Found this article today that goes along with this thread. It has a REALLY nice picture of her, too! She's beautiful. How a prized daughter of the Westboro Baptist Church came to question its beliefs -- http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/11/23/conversion-via-twitter-westboro-baptist-church-megan-phelps-roper?mbid=nl_151116_Daily&CNDID=38624875&spMailingID=8258051&spUserID=MTA4MjMyNTkyMDIzS0&spJobID=801594137&spReportId=ODAxNTk0MTM3S0
Guest immoralchristian
I don't know who Megan Phelps is but I do know who sam harris is, I have watched everything he has ever produced. It turns me on to see him put those A hole Christians right in there place, I say A hole because Christians only talk shit 24/7.
Burny
I love this podcast. I wish more folks would also read Will Storr's book, 'The Unpersuadables'. It's tough to understand how others can be so different from the rest of "us", but when you meditate on it for a while, everyone simply interprets life and the meaning of it from their own unique point of view that is formed through their unique experiences. The issue with religious interpretations is that many of them are intolerant of others' opinions and many go too far in their zeal to convert or dominate people who don't share their views. Of course there are non religious ideologies that have been pretty brutal too.
