You can try and pretend you're not a fundy but we know you are.  None of your points apply to us because we are EX-christians.  We don't have to worry about any of that shit now.  Neither do you, if you would only open your mind.

FreeThinkerNZ,

I am a fundamentalist concerning the core teachings of the scriptures.

I am against all the crap that has been attached to the Christian faith that has enslaved so many

and driven many more away from the faith.

It may not worry you, but it really ticks me off.

My mind is not open, it's thinking.

  • They ask for offering for church

They pretend that this offering is for God rather than for the church

They guilt you into giving by reading scriptures that are all about giving money to the church

How is any of this more crazy than:

"You can be best friends with the Creator of the universe who sacrificed to himself to appease himself of the sin you were born with because God set Adam and Eve up for a fall"

How is it any more crazy than:

"I have Good News!  God was going to torture you for all eternity but he won't if you just accept the way God had Jesus brutalized for you!"

How is it any more crazy than:

"Deny yourself and give up all worldly things in this life so that the promised afterlife will be perfect forever and ever and ever without end."

How is it any more crazy than:

"When you are alone just start talking out loud.  Invisible Jesus is right there with you and listening to everything you say."

Yeah, here is the thing.  The crap that enslaves so many and drives more away is the core teachings of the scriptures.

The Bible is mostly mythological bullshit. That said, though, I'm interested in knowing what you consider to be the core teachings of the scriptures?

It's almost impossible for a mind to be infected with religious belief and to be thinking at the same time. But, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for now. My mind is thinking too, but it is also open, but only to possibilities that actually are real possibilities. Christianity is very easy to prove false, so Christianity being true is not a possibility that I am open to...

Red Flags You Are In A Crazy Church --

1. They use a book that starts with, 'In the beginning...'.

2. Nuff said.

A fair question Brother Jeff.

I believe the scripture's core teaching is that Jesus was God.

When asked he said the greatest commandment, was to love God with all our heart, soul and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

This is how we understand the biblical message and our relationship to the world.

You lost me here IH. If this is so, why does Jesus always pray to God as if they were two seperate entities? It doesn't add up.

They teach that everyone is deserving of nothing less than eternal suffering in hell if they don't love the god that made the place, and will send them there, enough to win his favor...

Oh... Wait...

     - You believe god impregnated a virgin then was born as a human through that virgin

     - You ritualistically eat the "body" and "blood" of your lord and savior (the man born of the virgin)

     - You believe there are literally a "last days" even if you don't know precisely how it will play out

     - You believe that a god, any god, thinks or cares about you but have no actual evidence of this

     - You believe that a book that claims to be about god really is about god because it claims it is

There are so many more.  This is just silly.

The number one red flag you go to a crazy church?

You go to church.  Any church.  Any religion.  Full stop.

Well, whichever way you cut it, at least going to church is an active thing, as opposed to the passive position of carping from the sidelines.

Positivity and negativity. I can't see anything positive in your comments. Conversely, someone going to church is at least experiencing the positive aspect of belonging to a community, and will probably be giving to charity at regular intervals too, another positive thing.

Best wishes,

Paul.

So "community" and "charity" are reasons for going to a church?  Nothing more?

I could just sit in a park with other people and toss money into a fountain.  That's pretty much the same thing.

Read your post again and really analyze what you are saying and the assumptions you are making

All churches are crazy. That's why they're not called "clubs".

I find going to church to be a waste of time.  It is much better to sleep in or spend your Sunday morning

pursuing just about any other leisure activity.  As for community I have found from experience that it is

better to make friends with people where there is real connection and commonality.  Being friends with

somebody because they joined the same cultish club is shallow as these "friendships" often die the

moment one party questions the religion.

Furthermore, giving money to a scam artist where most of it goes to the pastor and building the pastor's

scam business is not a real charity.  It is far more effective to give the money to an actual charity with

low overhead and a high rate of passing the money along.  There are plenty of worthy causes out there.

Research individual groups to see how much of the money they use for their own organization.  Notice

that the vast majority of churches are not transparent on this issue because they are a money making

scheme for their leadership.  This is not a positive thing.

All churches essentially tell you, "We have no real evidence that any of what we teach is factual, but we ask that you just have faith in our guesswork regarding invisible, undetectable constructs."

That's just crazy.

My wife and I are agnostics. We dont go to church but we do give to animal charities. Why is it important to mill about at church watching people and their fake smiles and fake compassion when you know they're just ordinary bitchy people the rest of the week?

- Whatever you ask, Jesus will give it to you.

If you shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. john 14:14

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. luke 11:9

Even though the bible expressly states that.... you've taken it out of context, it's allegory, it doesnt mean what it expressly says...etc  Even IH doesnt believe in the bible. :)

I like to drink coffee and masturbate to porn. An orgasm is about a thousand times better than listening to a sermon. :)

Yes, that is about your level, I agree.

Typical 'meat-drink-copulation' cage-dweller. I see now why you don't take your philosophy of life too seriously. It is commendable that you give to animal charities though, I respect that.

Best wishes,

Paul.
