Goodbye Jesus

Became A Christian Four Years Ago -- Kim Davis

How many of you believe the story from Kim Davis that she "became a Christian four years ago"?  She describes herself as an Apostolic Christian who worships at the Solid Rock Apostolic Church three times a week.  She is a Kentuckian.  She has the Duggar's fashion sense.  She is not new to Christianity, and has no right to talk about a conversion at age 45!  If you went back five years and asked Kim Davis if she was a Christian, what are the chances that she would have said "yes"?  Based on what I know of people like her, she probably has a born-again experience periodically every five years.  I've heard so many bogus conversion stories, that I infer that she grew up in Christianity and simply "prays the sinner's prayer for real this time," every time that it is expedient for her to do so.

Christianity is such a deeply unsatisfying religion, although it promises so much.  Every Christian realizes that it sucks, which is why they are all ready to "convert again, for real this time," in order to have the experience that's advertised but that never comes. For the same reason that a compulsive hand-washer needs to do it again, a Christian also needs "be revived" repeatedly.  Davis uses the story of her so-called "conversion" to try to deflate any argument that she is being hypocritical when she denies two people a marriage license even though she has received four.  Her past conduct is irrelevant because she claims that five years ago she was something besides a Christian.  What was she?  An atheist like us?

Sarcastic mode on:

4 years ago she wasn't a true believer and then one day she was born again to become a true believer of jesus!

I used to think religious fundamental extremist were just brainwashed zombies that should be avoided, but now I think they are actually dangerous & their wackiness needs to be taken much more seriously. If they actually start getting their people elected to office that could turn into real problems for the entire country.

Re-churcing yourself is not the same as an ocd hand washing disorder. Christians don't need to be revived again because of ocd, they need to be revived again because it is a fake religion, with empty promises. The only way these people can stay a christian is by surrounding themselves with countless christians activities and books etc. If the bible were true, and god really was taking care of his own "sheep" by his own power, people would not have to keep forcing themselves to read christian books, getting re-baptized, buying different bible versions, having accountability partners, prayer meetings, and the like to keep them involved in what is suppose to be the one true religion. The reason christians have to inundate themselves with so much christian "stuff" is because if they were to simply rely on god's power to keep them as the bible promises, they would immediately fall away. Simply put, christians just don't want to admit that their religion and faith is all make believe.

I'm sorry for the bad quoting practice. I'm relatively new to this site.

But I do agree with what you said. There were countless times when I decided to "re-commit my life to Christ," when I was caught in "sin," until I realized who and what I was truly and only accountable to, and were truly and only affected by the mistakes I had made: other human beings. That realization made morality much clearer and gave me more motivation to do good.

I've had a taste of whisky lots of times, but it was only the last time I had any that I really drank it!? There's a problem with that argument somewhere. Small problem, it's as queer as a nine dollar note!

This topic is cracking me up so much. my old church had frequent altar calls where you could commit or re-commit your life to god. i did this 5 or 6 times. little changed apart from a short period of me tricking myself into thinking that everything had changed.

as a christian, i spent a year after my first rejection of christianity (de-conversion process) just coming back re-commiting, re-washing hoping it would work properly for god to finally like me or guide/contact/affect me/intervene in my life. complete bull-shit and at the end i found faith no matter how hard you stretch it faith can't substitute reality. and after 16 years in faith, i was in desperate need of reality.

anyway, apparently she's gone to jail for contempt of court, so there's that.

I wish it could have been resolved without her getting jailed, and so did the plaintiffs in the case, who asked the judge not to jail her.  But that's pretty much what she was gunning for all along - what better 'proof' of persecution than that mug shot?

Her complexion and physique is consistent with a person who has known, for her entire life, that "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin."

Kentuckians -- why can't they find a suit and tie?  Here is a video of Joe Davis, the husband of Kim Davis.  He's wearing a t-shirt and camo baseball cap on the most visible day of his life in the national spotlight.  I just can't understand why certain people can't put a good foot forward, but instead have to put on the whole "Duck Dynasty" shtick.  And they talk about the degradation of the national life!

Kim Davis' 21 year old son works as a deputy clerk under his mother in the same office.  He is refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples too.  I wonder when he became a Christian sharing at least this one religious tenet with his mother?

If deputy clerks are issuing the licenses now why couldn't they have been issuing them before?  Because Kim Davis wanted to handle and refuse the requests herself.

Catt, on the topic of needing prayer meetings and getting together with other Xtians...I don't think the bible ever promises that it's just the believer and God and all will be well. There is a LOT in the bible about community. It is a very common thing to socialize with people of like mind. One of the reasons I dropped BS (Bible Study) and even church, is that I don't have much in common with those people anymore, and one of my grieving points is that I miss the community.

So there's nothing wrong with Xtians hanging out together, praying and reading the bible together, and just being with each other. There is an element of needing it to bolster your faith, but I doubt it's because they are floundering in their faith. There are other things, such as difficulties in life, where support is much needed, or joyful times that you want to share with beloved friends. In my experience, hanging out with other Xtians had more to do with support and loving each other, than trying to bolster my faith. When my faith began to wobble, I bowed out pretty quick.

(and yes, that is because I recognize that these questions will not go over well with most of my xtian friends. Ask a tough question in BS, and you'll get no real answers. A blank look on the leader's face, perhaps, and some bible quotes or one former friend used to love to slap me with "My Utmost for His Highest" stuff)

It gets better.  Kim Davis worked in that office as a Deputy Clerk under her mother.  There are three generations involved.

Davis succeeded her mother, Jean W. Bailey, who was Rowan County clerk for nearly 40 years until she retired. Davis was one of her mother’s deputy clerks for much of that time, just as her 21-year-old son, Nathan, now works as one of her deputies.
