I agree with the author, but religion isn't going away anytime soon, or maybe ever. The good news is that religion is declining in numbers and popularity even in the American Bible belt.

I'm really afraid that human progress will not be a straight line.  If you look at the state of things, the immediate future doesn't look real promising.

 

Radical Islam is running rampant. Fundagelicals are demanding that America return to its "Christian Roots" by teaching ID in schools and they fabricate "evidence" to dispute evolution.

 

Perhaps our next president will be a seventh-day adventist.  A religion that has an obsession with end-of-the-world scenarios. 

 

Our species went from the beginning of wisdom with the greek philosophers and thinkers to 1,000 years of darkness.  And religion was the cause. 

 

 It would be naive to underestimate the power of religion to suppress or even extinguish knowledge and progress again.

It is inherent in religion to impede progress and deny science when it is at odds with some pet superstition.
