She makes her points well but I disagree with the proof she sees in the pudding. I see it differently.

“The thing that uniquely defines religion, the thing that sets it apart from every other ideology or hypothesis or social network, is the belief in unverifiable supernatural entities. Of course it has other elements -- community, charity, philosophy, inspiration for art, etc. But those things exist in the secular world, too. They're not specific to religion. The thing that uniquely defines religion is belief in supernatural entities. Without that belief, it's not religion.”

She acknowledge that religion does express certain elements. I think you word it differently and say it shows other elements

"Any other ideology or philosophy or hypothesis about the world is eventually expected to pony up. It's expected to prove itself true and/or useful, or else correct itself, or else fall by the wayside. With religion, that is emphatically not the case. Because religion is a belief in the invisible and unknowable -- and it's therefore never expected to prove that it's right, or even show good evidence for why it's right -- its capacity to do harm can spin into the stratosphere."

I agree that God or Christianity can never be proved using science?

How can you prove love or courage using science?

Abstract ideas cannot be proved by science but I do believe you can choose to see evidence.

Interesting article on using computers to prove God:

Based on Godel's Ontological argument. I don't buy Ontological arguments. They're circular in their reasoning, and assumes that the premise is correct to begin with.

But sure, let's say there is a God, a Prime Mover, why on Earth would it be YHWH? The Biblical God has got way too many human characteristics to be "The Highest that can be conceived", but I can understand that reasoning if it refers to an impersonal force beyond human cognition. Therefore, something akin to the Hindu Brahman feels much more likely than a vengeful tribal God who drowns his own children because they couldn't behave well enough.

Ironhorse, I keep reading and re-reading your comment but I don't understand what you are saying in your second paragraph, after the quote (I'm on my phone so I can't do fancy things now myself). Maybe it's because English is my second language but would you mind explaining a bit?

Btw, feelings are researched by science. They are connected to brain activity and bodily reactions that can both be measured, but it says nothing about what caused the feelings (for example pictures of babies, something revolting, etc). I think I recall that this has been done on people who are praying, in which case the brain activity only says there are certain processes at work, and nothing about the gods prayed to.

The Christian God is easy to disprove. He fails the descriptions and promises attributed to him in his very own holy book. However Christianity teaches that it's our/sin's/satan's fault if we don't see God is true. What a convenient guilt trip.

A some kind of spiritual being that we know nothing about could be there, but that's not how the Bible tells us it is.

How can you prove love or courage using science?

By observing the evidence of action.

"Good morning children, today we are talking about the Good News!"

"(class in unison) Praise Jesus, misses Haldersnot!"

"Good class. Now to begin, children can go to heaven right away!"

"(class in unison) YAAAAYYY!!!!"

"But once you hear about Jesus, you need to love him."

"(class in unison) we LOVE Jesus!"

"And if you don't love Jesus, you go to a bad place. You go to hell. And you can never see your parents there."

"(class) *gasps*"

"But everyone here loves Jesus, right?"

"(class) we love Jesus."

"(student) Misses Haldersnot?"

"Yes?"

"(student) Wouldn't it be better if we all die as children?"

"What do you mean, little one?"

"(student) That way everyone can go to heaven."

And for that very reason, several fundamentalist psychos murdered their own children. Praise the Lord!

And then there's the folks like IH that attempt to equate indoctrination with actual education that makes everything in the example above okay.

I just said that the word was once used as a term for teaching.

What is posted above is brainwashing.
