Goodbye Jesus

Time Really Aids In Deconversion

When I just fell off the Christian truck, I was very disoriented and it felt to me that Christianity must still be real. But after a year or so without constant brain washing I started to see it clearly. Christianity is a farce.

Time does make a difference.

Yes indeed. I did a lot of research to debunk Christianity or any religion for that matter.

Time does heal all wounds.

Took me the better part of a decade to fully grasp that I could think and judge and approach the universe without a Christianized mindset; in the early days, I might have been a non-Christian, but still thought in the same black and white, dogmatic terms. It took a very long time to deprogram from all that, to read opposing arguments and let go of my attachments to Christian-style thinking and paradigms.

It does I think depend on how deeply one is into it. For me it seems much easier than most have had it; it maybe took me a few weeks to get over the worst of the doubt (but that was after i finally made the decision; I'd been struggling on and off for a long time before). Still, as Lycorth points out, part of it is the dogmatic attitude to issues, which is one of the hardest things I feel able to let go of. Still, there are certain opinions I hold which might seem like carryovers from my Christian days, but I justify that on the grounds that the decision to believe them was mine and not without thinking them through for myself.

Having mild Aspergers it is hard in ways for me to empathise with those of us here whose experience has been radically different to mine; but it seems clear that if you have been immersed in something all your life it's harder to let go of and probably prompts more anger against it when you do. (Or perhaps this is due to experiences with the church or some believers &c.). Sometimes on here I need to remind myself of this when I don't feel that way, and allow for that.

Time does help, it can take a while to deprogramme yourself from this stuff. Looking back at it from the outside allows you to see things about it that you couldn't see before too. I remember the day it clicked with me that I didn't have to constantly repent for everything every few minutes (that's probably not an exaggeration, repenting was about all I did all the time) and that I could think whatever I wanted. I felt freedom I hadn't had for a long time at that point, and I couldn't believe how much quieter my mind was. For the first time in years I was able to think clearly and I was allowed to have whatever opinions I wanted to without having to make sure they lined up with the bible. That was an amazing day.

It does. On top of some of the already mentioned things, one important thing for me was that time went on but nothing extra bad was happening despite the threats in the Bible. Rather the contrary - I've had more inner peace, more success, less insecurity, better attitude about pain and illness, and many happy coincidences that I used to think were prayer answers.

It does take a while, and some things still do crop up for longer.  The fear of hell took a while, until I realized it was all totally made up.

The more you read (here or in books or other articles) and watch on youtube and discuss with like-minded people, if you know any (being on here is good), also helps a lot.
