Goodbye Jesus

Christianity Makes Life Disappointing.

This life is full of mystery, nobody really knows what is going on or the reason for it. When I was younger I tried so hard to believe in Jesus but I just was not able to do it.

If Christianity is true, it is such a disappointing meaning to life. I mean really? Is that the BEST thing that God could come up with?

Good verses Evil, it is like the plot of every bad film you have ever seen. All this bad shit goes on in the world and the only way out is to accept Jesus as your master it seriously annoys me that so many people think it is true.

I'm lost, someone please explain it to me.

Welcome to Ex-c Simonion123! So glad you are here with us.

Christianity is hopeful, magical thinking that some great man or spirit in the sky can help you or save you from problems in life. Life is life. Good and bad. We, ourselves have no choice but to make the best of it.

Personally for me, the worst things that can happen to a person happened to me when I was a christian. There is no difference since I left the christian god. Matter of fact, life seems to be a little better. And I don't even have to pray anymore. Humans need to be grateful for every good day, cause shit happens.....(death, heartbreak, loss of job, disease, accidents, etc...) and you must be prepared to accept that truth. It's not easy some days, but until one faces the cold, hard facts, one will fight against being here on earth. I know I did. So relax and enjoy every good day that comes along.

That life is full of mystery, I agree.  I take seriously no claim to know "the answer" - be that answer that god loves us, or that the universe is a meaningless machine, or any shade of opinion in between.

Certainty is over-rated.  Christianity is merely one method by which people seek certainty.  In claiming to have found it, the adherents lose the capacity to entertain other possibilities, however rational, sensible, or at least worthy of a passing enquiry.

As I've quoted elsewhere: "I conceive of nothing, in religion, science, or philosophy, that is more than the proper thing to wear, for a while".  [Charles Hoy Fort]

Hi Simonion! Welcome to the club.

I totally agree that biblegod's version of the meaning of life is depressing. We exist to worship him, according to him. I really don't understand why people think that constantly reassuring a needy god that they love him gives purpose to their lives.

Is that the BEST thing that God could come up with?

I have thought about this before. I mean, god is suppose to be the creator of the entire universe and everything contained within it, and all he could come up with is a trashy collection of 66 books about how he and his "chosen one's murder-rape-rape of underage girls-murdering pregnant women-destruction of people and their homes-laws that make no sense at all, and hellfire?

Religion was suppose to help supply answers to life's questions and provide safety, security, comfort, love and salvation. Instead it just promotes violent hatred for their fellow man as well as instilling fear, panic and dread. Christianity never provided me any comfort at all. I found the christian religion to be extremely depressing and inspired nothing but hopelessness. If this is the best a supposed all-powerful god could come up with, he failed miserably. The bible, when actually read (most christians haven't which is bizarre in itself) reads more like the word of a demon or insane person than a benevolent and all loving father god. The gospel isn't "good news" at all, since jesus himself said that most of humanity was going to hell, even believers who didn't commit their entire life 100% of the time to him.

The real "good news" about christianity is that it is a fraudulent sham that has been debunked from genesis to revelation and so we need never fear hell or it's tyrant psychopathic serial killing, pro child raping, pathologically lying god.

I encourage you simonion to keep looking for your own truth and enjoy the freedom which christians are forbidden; studying science and astronomy and a whole slew of books about life that will engage your sense of wonder and awe.

As far as so many people thinking christianity is true, the numbers are dwindling year by year. From what I have been reading, more and more people are leaving the churches and all this jesus myth crap behind them. Most people who claim to believe in jesus and christianity aren't really christians. They just call themselves that in name but aren't true disciples who are taking up their cross daily. Only the fundies are really letting all this man made christian crap go to their head as infallible truth.

My view is that all religion is a cultural-specific construct which tries to offer 1. some explanation as to why we are here, and 2. a guide to what to do now that we are here.  Which religion you believe is true is largely dependent on which culture you are born into, since you will pretty much inherit the worldview of your culture as instilled by your parents, teachers, friends, etc.

There's no reason for any rational person to believe Christianity is any more true than Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Greek mythology, or any other modern or ancient religion is true.

I was thinking the other day about how hard life was in early America, and it would have been similar anywhere in the world.  All people did was work to survive, there were none of the modern conveniences we have today, and disease, starvation, weather, predatory animals, etc., were daily threats of life with often no remedy.  I am sure in our pre modern world religion was one of the few things that gave people the will to wake up in the morning and struggle through another day.  Religion in ancient times may have been key to the early survival of the human race.  Doesn't mean it's true though....

Christianity is a crutch to help people through life. And it really does work. To a point.

Christianity gives us an excuse to have a pity party, because sin is so horrible and has ruined our lives. Christianity gives us an excuse to check out of responsibility, because God is so wonderful and has taken care of our lives. Christianity gives us an excuse to believe in fairytales and film endings, where we don't have to be in charge of our lives, or face the difficult questions.

However, then comes the fact that Christianity is a delusion, and in every person's delusion, they get an inkling of the truth that their worldview is false. If they ignore it, they are happy. If they accept it, they start to doubt more and more. They realize that life is still life. They're just making excuses for their horrible, unoriginal movie.
