I Can Sense My Abortion Views Shifting As Spouse Endures Pregnancy

This came as a bit of a surprise to me, because I had figured that having a child would challenge me to sympathize with prolife ideas. But, if anything, this experience has done the exact opposite. I haven't put it into words just yet, I guess I'm still discovering how I feel, but my gut reactions to abortion related ideas have shifted decidedly to the left. I think it mainly has to do with watching my wife slowly expand I to a caricature of mike wazowski -- it's terrifying and it's not even my body. Idk man. We both agreed that early pregnancy basically exists as the source material for stories about witchcraft, blood magic, and other earthy mystery -- it just does not conform to reality!

Any part in particular?

OK, I don't know where blood magic comes into all this, but I see your point about becoming more sympathetic to pro-choice views because your wife is pregnant. Makes plenty of sense to me.

The idea is that pregnancy is such a weird and rule-bending thing that it's easy to see it inspiring certain kinds of fantastical stories. Or perhaps we just read too much Terry Pratchett, that's completely possible.

But what does that have to do with your views on abortion?

Pregnancy is as natural as anything, you've just never seen it "up close", so to speak. I also don't get how that changed your views on abortion.

I didn't say it was unnatural, I said it was rule-bending. And I did say that I can't explain precisely why or even how far and to what degree my gut instincts have changed, only that they have and that the direction is to the left.

Are you saying that strong impressions about pregnancy wouldn't have an effect on feelings about abortion? I'm not sure I understand your confusion.

I understand very well that the first time you are really confronted with pregnancy personally, your views on abortion change. It's easier to understand the implications of a pregnancy when you're really confronted with it. :)

For me it was actually the other way round!

I never really thought much about abortion, but had a very "feminist", pro-choice view. I wasn't very religious back then. But when I was pregnant (unplanned) myself and the issue of abortion came very, very close, I suddenly realised I was more pro-life than I had always thought. Abortion was not a good option for me, couldn't do it. I experienced very strongly that there was a human-being growing inside my belly, that I felt connected to. I looked up every bit of how he developped and killing him just did not feel right at all. It wasn't easy, but I do have a son who is very happy with the life that I gave him. The abortion laws in my country (especially the part where you can abort a baby almost to the exact moment where he is ready for life) still feel much too liberal to me. I'm still much more conservative on this subject than I used to be.

Interesting that your experience directed you exactly the other way! Maybe it's different for a woman? I'm interested to hear what made you change your mind, if you can find the words.

I have had one. Back when I was homeless at 18, with a very unstable and abusive partner three years older than me. It was pretty painful. It was when I wasn't christian but I still thought hell was real, so I struggled with the opposing feelings of relief, and fear. The choice panned out for me well.

I can understand that you chose abortion in a situation like that! It must have been a difficult experience and I am happy it turned out to be the right choice for you.

Thank you, it's something I used to beat myself up over. Now if it comes up I'm not shy about saying it to pretty much anyone I know except my parents, because if my older sister found out I think she would be really really sad. she would still love me, but she has 8 kids and is very pro life. It was scary. I was a really messed up kid and I had no ability to make decisions or do anything with my life at the time. I went on to make another dumb decision and I got pregnant again the next year. I almost more ashamed about that because I know how bad and irresponsible that sounds. But anyway, I ended up being stable, giving my (now fiance) a child he was told by doctors he could never have, now we are a family and we are both better off than before. I'm still mad at myself for gambling and hoping everything would be ok, it's so stupid, but I'm not a dumb kid anymore, and somehow, the decisions I made back then didn't ruin everything. It seems I've always gotten away by the skin of my teeth. my son is now almost three.

Hey Yrth, is your name based on the Riddlemaster Trilogy?

Hell, they're only cars. Who cares if some don't make it out of the factory, it's all covered by ford.
