Debunking The "israel 1948 Prophecy"?

I don't find anything about the claims of Christianity to be believable or plausible in any way, but this Israel 1948 thing kind of freaked me out a little bit.

Is this based on propaganda that's falsified? Or just a fluke coincidence?

In Ezekiel 4:3-6, the prophet said the Jews, who had lost control of their homeland, would be punished for 430 years. This prophecy, according to Bible scholar Grant Jeffrey, pinpointed the 1948 rebirth of Israel. Here’s a summary of Jeffrey’s theory:

  1. Ezekiel said the Jews were to be punished for 430 years because they had turned away from God. As part of the punishment, the Jews lost control of their homeland to Babylon. Many Jews were taken as captives to Babylon.
  2. Babylon was later conquered by Cyrus in 539 BC. Cyrus allowed the Jews to leave Babylon and to return to their homeland. But, only a small number returned. The return had taken place sometime around 536 BC, about 70 years after Judah lost independence to Babylon.
  3. Because most of the exiles chose to stay in pagan Babylon rather than return to the Holy Land, the remaining 360 years of their punishment was multiplied by 7. The reason is explained in Bible’s book of Leviticus. (Leviticus 26:18Leviticus 26:21Leviticus 26:24 and Leviticus 26:28). In Leviticus, it says that if the people did not repent while being punished, the punishment would be multiplied by 7. And, by staying in pagan Babylon, most exiles were refusing to repent.
  4. So, if you take the remaining 360 years of punishment and multiply by 7, you get 2,520 years. But, Jeffrey says those years are based on an ancient 360-day lunar calendar. If those years are adjusted to the modern solar calendar, the result is 2,484 years.
  5. And, there were exactly 2,484 years from 536 BC to 1948, which is the year that Israel regained independence.

(In this Bible passage, Ezekiel is asked by God to symbolically act out the 430 years of punishment)

It would seem to me that an omniscient god would have known how long a year actually was, so I don't see why his divinely inspired prophecy would rely on a flawed human calendar.  Sloppy god.

Secondly, even with the assumption of the 360 day lunar calendar, the math still doesn't work when you factor in the corrections that were periodically made to the calendar to account for the inaccuracy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_calendar

The present Hebrew calendar is the product of evolution, including a Babylonian influence. Until the Tannaitic period (approximately 10–220 CE) the calendar employed a new crescent moon, with an additional month normally added every two or three years to correct for the difference between twelve lunar months and the solar year. When to add it was based on observation of natural agriculture-related events.

So what you get if you do the math is a somewhat closer to accurate version of the modern calendar then what Mr. Jeffrey is proposing, and the remaining inaccuracies work out to make the average year longer, not shorter.  Even assuming that this extra month was only added every third year, you get (360+360+390)/3=370 days.  So the correct adjustment of the number of years would be 2520*370/365.25= 2552 (approx) years, not 2484.  Apparently he thinks Israel is going to be reborn this year.

All you have here is yet another christian who is ignoring inconvenient facts in an attempt to make his unsubstantiated ideas appear to have some sort of merit.

But, Jeffrey says those years are based on an ancient 360-day lunar calendar.

First, it's been known for a long time (clearly since before those babble stories) how long a year is. Why would anyone use a 360-day calender, knowing that there's 5 more days in a year?

Second, while these things aren't constant (a morontheist may want to defend their nonsense by making such a point), Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down. This means that in ancient times there were more days in a year, not fewer.

One two punch. That should be enough already to tear down this particular crap.

An omniscient God would have established a correct calendar for all time in the beginning, not have one for a time for a select group of people, and then create another one that everyone accepts. Just proof that Christianity is a man made religion.

Awww. I though this was about jebus coming back within one generation of the return to Israel.

It's been a lil bit more than that already. It's almost like he's not coming.

Thanks for debunking  this. You all are so smart. :)

Hopefully this will help anyone else who was stuck on that claim as well.

Im wondering where repentance supposedly occured. Not only that but even if the timing is a freaky coincidence( dont feel like checking out the math to be honest) it doesnt prove the prophecy because the events that led to the creation of the state of israel are so incredibly political and human that its hard to belive a god would be involved. Not only that like others said, numerology is a wacky way to prove you exist when you could say give someone the cure for aids or prevented the second world war which is how israel came to be a nation again.

More than one wacky fundie Jew (and Christians and Muslims too of course) have called the Holocaust "a repentant act", "divine punishment" and whatnot. The very name implies as much. In any case, it makes good ol' Adonai/HaShem/YHWH sound very appealing, no? Not only did he drown the entire World and encourage genocides during antiquity, he also had millions of his own chosen people murdered.

and that line of thinking that the religious use if one could call it that makes me wonder about there mental health.
