See You At The Pole! Facebook Challenge, Anyone?

So I guess tomorrow is the "See You at the Pole" day here in the US, where good christian boys and girls gather around flagpoles at their school (before or after usually) to pray.

Of course, they do this in direct (dis)obedience to the big Jeez as stated in Matthew 6:5. So you don't have to look it up, in short:

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward."

Yes, my precious children. Go be like the hypocrites and pray at the pole in front of your classmates, so you can show off your righteousness.

I'm half tempted to take their promotional material: https://www.facebook.com/myseeyouatthepole/photos/a.346895938685960.74807.129528333756056/1130261763682703/?type=3&theater

Then post it on my wall, then simply put Matthew 6:5 as a text comment with the picture to see how they justify the point blank disobedience to their almighty god and savior.

You would think that if the immortal words of the all-powerful creator says "don't pray in public", you would listen.

Don't be just half-tempted. Go ahead and throw it out there and see what happens.

Trust me when I say I want to.

My biggest issue - half of my clients are religious and most of them are friends with me on FB. Several would take it as a direct assault on their views and would immediate cut their business with me.

Thats...a lot of money. :D

Oh..... Well, we can dream about it, anyway.

BTW, I know nothing about Facebook. Is it possible to have an anonymous or fake account?

It is, yes. But it requires some time to build up friends on there - if I did a second account, I would be choosey about who I friended, so it would just be an echo chamber of everyone agreeing with me on this (and other) issues.

In all fairness the bible does not say anything pole worship.  Well, unless we count Asherah.  Who was wood not metal.  And we can't be sure her form was strictly a pole.  I'm pretty sure she didn't hold flags.  I think the bible is good with that.

Like another recent post on Ex-C - extian religions/churches are acting more and more like businesses and, I'm guessing, the public xtian actions such as this are a form of advertisement.

Case in point - when Mrs. MOHO prays at home ( I know, I know enough with the Mrs. MOHO already) she preys silently to herself. But, when in public (restaurants etc) she looks around the room to make sure enough people are watching her then makes a demonstrative downward sweeping motion with her head and closes here eyes in much the same manor. Then the words are out loud and emotional.

Knowing her this behavior is part advertisement and part "I'm better than you because I prey to an imaginary deity that never answers prayers or communicates with us in any way, shape, or form."

The picture on that facebook link says: "We Cry Out"

Cry out to what? These nuts have been 'crying out' for two thousand years now, and its never made a single difference in the world. If prayer worked, there wouldn't be anything left to pray about because people's prayers would have already been answered long ago. You would think at some point these dumbasses would figure out that all their prayers aren't being answered at all and come to the conclusion that there is no one listening because there is no one there.

Ugh.  You've got yourself one of those.  A public restaurant prayer.  Just icky.

When I was young my parents tried this a couple of times and us kids rebelled quite loudly.  We prayed at home every time at family meals at the table but not when eating in restaurants.  They just gave up after the bitch fests we put on.

Perhaps you start to put on your own little show when the missis does hers?  Doesn't have to be much.  Doesn't have to be for everyone.  I find people who when praying don't expect, like nor really tolerate and sort of competition in their special little arena.  The slightest thing tends to throw them off their game.

So while she is putting on a show, dig in and enjoy the food before it gets cold.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cringe. I used to pray before meals wherever I was as I felt it would have been hypocritical not to.

My mother does this whenever my husband and I go out to lunch with her. Sure, she buys us food so that's cool, but she makes a very extreme display. It's how they're supposed to be. It's disgusting how similar it is to an advertisement, and ironic, considering the Bible actually discourages public, loud prayer.

Abijah,

Yes, you are, of course, correct about the bilble forbiding public preyer.

Mrs. MOHO knows this (even though she's a scream'n fundy she has actually read some of the bible) but apperance is everything to her and there are so many fundies in my county...

Yeah, that would be quite annoying. I did used to pray before meals, even at restaurants, but never in a showy fashion; I would just quietly thank God for the food. Even as a Christian, I would've been annoyed by people flaunting their prayers, since it signifies arrogance and conflicts with what the Bible teaches.

Same here. I thought it was odd when folks would pray loudly. Its like, do you really think youre going to witness to someone effectively with a display of complete arrogance?
