During my Christian years, my political and social views were more-or-less "Conservative". Now they're much harder to categorize, and they're still evolving. But the term "Liberal Right" as described in this article seems like a pretty good fit for me... https://www.theobjectivestandard.com/2016/07/liberal-right-vs-regressive-left-and-religious-right/

I think the traditional right and left are going through a crisis of faith these days too. Both, but especially the left, are unrecognizable these days.

the radical left(as a movement) died in 2000 when it decided to be dishonest and say nadar gave us bush. All that is left now are unorganized renmants that amount to the people who roleplay the civil war.

Then what you are saying is effectively Tyranny of the Majority.

It never gets old, does it?

When the majority decide on something that benefits everyone, some of those who had a different idea will cry "TYRANNY!"

The Right gave the cry when Obama was elected and the Left made the same cry when Trump was elected. Such is the price of living with other people and their different ideas. Nobody likes a sore loser. Perhaps a pacifier and safety pin is in order?

In a diverse society, what is the alternative to majority rule? History shows that the alternatives are kingdoms, dictatorships or chaos that stops all growth and progress leaving the society to fall under the power of the strongest and most well armed dictator. Those who live in a society and enjoy its benefits can suck it up while they try to change minds, leave that society, or they can claim their victimhood and wear it like a thorny crown. Or a clown hat.

Poor baby. The American experiment has failed. I suppose given human nature it had to.

Ok, that was a big article. I did read the whole thing.

Regarding my social and political views: I'm a baby as far as free thinking goes, so as one might expect I am still rapidly developing and changing my views as I learn and reason more.

I currently feel uncomfortable adopting any political label including liberal right. For me I don't associate with an ideology, but with policies I consider to be true and best for the society in which I live. To me it does not matter which party, or side of the spectrum this policy comes from. Now granted, I probably tend to consider liberal right polices better more of the time than left policies and conservative policies, but that doesn't stop me from agreeing with any particular point of view.

A problem I feel with our 'democratic' form of government is that we vote based along ideology lines, rather than a "these are the best policies of all ideologies" line.

Hard to read yet another mindless rant from an "objectivist" who simply builds "liberal" straw mans to knock them down. Anyone could, of course, do the exact same thing with "conservative," "libertarian," "objectivist," or whatever this douchebag author wishes to label himself this week.

Tyranny is actually tyranny, not just shit you disagree with. Tyranny of the majority would be what African Americans experienced under Jim Crow and what homosexuals experienced under the anti-sodomy laws.

I've stated this before in a different way, but both the left and right have fallen victim to appealing to idiots for their vote. For the right, this means appealing to religious fundies. For the left, this means appealing to those who have their heads up their asses in identity politics. Both of these are poisonous and can backfire depending on the circumstances. Obama and Trumps rise to power can even be seen as examples of this.

In the case of Obama, a nation growing less religious and a millennial generation coming to vote for the first time rejected a man we saw as a dinosaur ( McCain ) along with his fundy idiot sidekick ( Palin ). People had grown tired of the rights constant appeal to "God says so" as a national policy system. The conservative establishment failed to notice that appealing to religion too much was actually turning people off. Even many Christians saw Palin as a nutter. Many also saw this appeal to religion as a way to mask the fact that Bushes neocon policies had destroyed the economy. "Jesus" was not only not a good enough reason to vote for the office that caused the "great recession" to continue in power, it was seen as all the more reason to kick them out.

In the case of Trump, the lefts constant appeal to politically correct identity politics led to their downfall. For the past 5 years they have doubled down on this anti-american, divisive, "Check your privilege" Frankfurt school psuedointellectual nonsense. They created a political madhouse where people are ranked on a progressive stack and then prescribed retroactive social penalties or benefits based on which intersectional group they fall under. Turns out, people don't really like being judged based on arbitrary features they didn't even choose for themselves. Trump is thus the counter revolution to this. By electing the most politically incorrect and toxic candidate possible, Americans found a way to give SJWs the middle finger treatment in the most blatant way we could.

My community voted to put some speed bumps on our residential streets. Sometimes I like to go fast on those streets. I didn't want the speed bumps. I'm a victim of tyranny.

You just won the internet.

Btw, how does someone like you survive in a place like Portland? Oregon seems nice enough, but isn't the cities of the NW a haven for those smug "leftist" assholes, much like the Deep South is a haven for wingnuts and bible thumpers?

Portland has a lot more people like me than people realize. Plenty of us are tired of identity politics hypocrisy. ID-pol has actually made Portland a meaner place and those of us smart enough to recognize it for the fraudulent ideology it is are fed up with it.

Salem even voted for Trump. Clackamas went 43-49 Trump.

SJWs in Portland are what I consider to be an "extremely vocal slight majority that pisses everyone else off". I don't think these people realize how close they are coming to turning Oregon red with their bullshit.

It seems to me that the article is promoting Libertarianism under cloak.

A Libertarian is socially liberal but financially conservative. It amounts to Liberal minded Republicans. Ron and Rand Paul, are such. Gary Johnson is such, if you were paying attention during the election.

I never really looked into Libertarianism until a couple years ago. But I realized very quickly that I find more agreement there than anywhere else. I come from a long line of Christian, southern Republicans. When I turned 18 I registered Republican. I have always had problems with the left as a whole as I don't agree with much of the logic. However, as an ex-christian I grew very distant from the conservative right over time. I found myself exploring Pantheistic philosophy and Atheism, which lean more to the left and are the domain of liberals. I've come to oppose the Christian right and their insistence on social domination. But I also oppose the same from the left. I never quite fit in to any one group.

If you read the above link you'll see the correspondences between your article and Libertarianism.

I find myself in much agreement. The government needs to back way off and get way the hell out of everyone's personal liberty. Gary Johnson didn't really have much of chance this time around. I knew it. But I hold out hope that the 3rd largest party will persevere long enough to where society catches up to these ideals on small government, personal liberty and such...

Josh, thanks for reading the article and for sharing your thoughts. You are right, there is a lot of overlap between the philosophy in the article (which the writer has elsewhere described as 'Objectivism') and Libertarianism or 'Classical Liberalism'. Although I have not studied Objectivism (the philosophy of Ayn Rand) at length, it seems to be a more all-encompassing approach to life than Libertarianism. It specifically rejects the role of religion as a basis for morality, so while there are plenty of Libertarians who consider themselves Christian, you'll be hard-pressed to find any Objectivists who are Christian or even theists!

Like you, I have found myself somewhat homeless politically since my deconversion. I did closely follow Gary Johnson in 2016, and would certainly prefer him to either Trump or Clinton. However I REALLY like Austin Petersen, who ran for the Libertarian nomination and seems like a future candidate. Interestingly Petersen, who had previously referred to himself as atheist, downplayed his unbelief in 2016 and at most referred to himself as 'agnostic', so anathema is atheism in the political arena even today.

Anyway, thanks again for commenting. By the way, have you read any Ayn Rand? I want to, if I ever find the time...

Seems to me that on a planet with limited resources, those who take more than their share and destroy the integrity of the fragile environment while claiming private property r it's and free market are the greatest thieves.

Who decides people get to die and the planet has no future so that they can drive range rovers, own private islands and over fish the seas?

seems this whole business about the thievery is just word play after all.

I stopped playing the faith game years ago. Today we live in a world that hasn't replenished itself of its resources as you suggest. In fact, the resources are dwindling and the eco system is on life support and the military and the police are shoring up the land and the remaining resources for the tiny handful of people who own more nearly everyone else combined and they're doing it by outright thievery even under the rules of private property. As I pointed out, you call something thievery when it breaks the rules of the particular system you have chosen. In another system, those who play by the rules of capitalism are thieves.

Some people's definition of 'theft' hinges entirely on who is doing the stealing. Theft from the poor or disenfranchised is simply the market at work, theft from wealthy individuals and faceless corporations seeking world and economic domination is Socialism and pure evil.

For those not so equipped already it is impossible to make a winning argument for empathy, sympathy or fairness. When one believes that might makes right, there is no way to combat that position of faith.
