What's the Big Deal About Alcohol and Drinking?

30 posts in this topic

Yeah I am grateful that I've never been predisposed toward alcohol.

I can't imagine not being in control of my body.

One day, I may be surrounded by people drinking wine.

It may look attractive to join in.

I hope I have the courage to say no thanks.

Not because drinking is evil, but because I just don't need to let myself feel inferior because I'm the only one in the room who doesn't take to it.

I still see no point in it, personally.

You get pleasure, but at what cost?

But you could say the same thing about pornography, which I do enjoy.

To each their own.

Always been interested to hear about people's experiences with alcohol.

Why is there a cost? It actually has health benefits if used in moderation and there's a cost to not using it; especially if you eat a diet high in fatty foods. There's a reason Italians are one of the healthiest nations.

Also, I get not wanting to give in to peer pressure, but you're an adult now (assuming) and you get to make your own decisions. Maybe they just know something you don't know. Alcohol doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be abused, but a nice glass of wine can be one of life's great pleasures. Don't let the propaganda from your xian upbringing cloud your opinion on these things otherwise xianity wins even long after you leave its doctrine behind.

You're definitely right.

But my aversion toward it isn't based off Christianity.

The cost for me, personally, is potentially losing control of my actions.

That's why I made this thread. I wanted merely to see the appeal of alcohol from the mindset of others who enjoyed it.

From a secular perspective, I just never got into it. Seemed more trouble than it was worth.

I do remember actually having wine one time at communion, though.

Oddly enough, a church actually used the real deal and not just grape juice.

It had a kick to it that I wasn't used to. Somebody explained that it was legitimate wine.

It tasted appealing.

I can definitely see why people would enjoy it, but the desire for it doesn't exist for me.

---

As for the peer pressure part. Sure, I'm an adult, but even as adults we often try to do things we wouldn't normally do to fit in.

It's a childish tendency for sure, but many adults (myself included) struggle with it.

I'm personally learning to live a life where I am my own person.

----

We basically agree in different ways.

Alcohol does have health benefits and can be a fun thing to enjoy in moderation.

I'm the type who enjoys a drink alone (or with max 2 other people) the most. Social drinking is kind of difficult for me. I hear people say alcohol makes everything "more beautiful" or something, I find it distances me from emotion and people very fast so I might start behaving badly long before the intoxication should be at the level that I'm not in control. So I am in control but unable to discern between good and bad ideas. Not always, but it has happened after 2 drinks before. I also never have blacked out despite having drunk a lot on a few occasions.

I know that liking to drink alone is not a good sign and I fight a lot of urges to buy big amounts of alcohol.

I love drinking alone. I had a lovely glass of Coopers Craft whisky neat last night while sorting through my jumbled thoughts from the day.

Getting drunk alone is probably a bad sign though.
