Changing Social Order: Marriage

Posted Oct 17 2006 Written for Is the Institution of Marriage as we know it about to change?   I'm a single woman who has never been married and has never had biological kids. I grew up in a religious culture where sex outside marriage was strictly forbidden and I have had no desire to change my habits since I left. Premarrital sex that resulted in a pregnancy was severely punished.   Even a rape victim was forced to marry the man who raped her. According to rumour, this case might neve

Women In Strict Religions: Inside Story

Posted Oct 17 2006 Written for True Muslims on the Main Blog posted 10/16/2006 . I suspect the horse and buggy culture I come from is about the same as the strict Islam communities so far as women are concerned. One thing that hits me between the eyes about these very strict religions where women are forced to submit to the men is that they don't really.   I saw two separate middle-aged Muslim couples in the grocery store. In each case they spoke a language I did not understand.

Second Coming: Lingering Legacy Of Josh Mcdowell

Written for Second Coming: How Could You Miss It? Oct 17 2006   I didn't grow up with TV or movies so I never saw the movie Thief in the Night until a few years ago. There were a few clips on Randall Balmer's series Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory put together in the late eighties--early ninties. I don't remember if I read the story form of it or not but it would be the kind of literature that my mother would try to distract us from. Not really what we believed. I'm unclear what "Rapture" is

Gramma

I've got some pleasant secular Christmas music playing and it puts me in touch with Christmas at my grandmothers back when I was a child under ten. I was barely aware of the religious meaning of Christmas back then. Christmas meant good food--chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, followed by fruit salad and pies--the likes of which only she could cook. In the afternoon there was more good food--grapes, oranges, and popcorn balls and homemade mashmallows. There was the lemon yellow softwood floor of h

Double Deconversion

Another version of my story. I think it's the best written so far.   Double Deconversion .: posted Friday, October 27, 2006 ::: by .:webmaster:. ::: EmailThis! » Sent in by "RubySera"   I posted an eximony some time ago because I felt I had to explain about my background. I feel it was riven with anger, frustration, and confusion. I think my thoughts are more organized now so I will post another one.   Min

Side-effects Of Freedom

There are so many unexpected but very pleasant side-effects to the freedom of deconversion. Today, because of business, I paid a very brief visit to my parents and sister who takes care of them. I've been living in the city four years but every time I went to visit family and met horse and buggies on the road I felt overwhelmed with--I don't even have a name for it--heavy black clouds of dread would engulf me. I did not think this would ever change. But today I actually enjoyed driving th

Blissful Ignorance Shattered: Fragmented Jesus

I'm beginnig to see what people mean when they say they stopped believing when they read the Bible. I grew up reading the Bible. I did not understand how anyone could grow up without knowing the Bible. I realize I read it more deeply and have a better grasp on it than many people do but still.....how could anyone NOT know the biblical narrative and all its contradiction?   I thought I did. I am finding otherwise. Just last week or so I was writing about Jesus' tumultuous relationship with hi

Jesus Lost His Family Too

Jeus lost his family, too.   I suspect what appears in Mark 3:21 and 22 is a sanitized version of what really happened.   Jesus is shown as being calm and in control of the situation. Yet according to Mark, his family went out to restrain hm because the neighbours were saying he was out of his mind, and the scribes--the preachers--were saying he was casting out "Beelzebub" or evil spirits "by the ruler of the demons" (Mark 3:21, 22).   Jesus' saying about the divided house was probab

Death As A Deconvert

I don't think any of us can make any promises for you or provide a cut-and-dried solution to this question. After all, not a single one of us has yet

Resumé: My Religious And Academic Background

This was originally written as an application for a forum that is fairly strict regarding who is allowed to join. Except for published authors, real names of people and institutions are removed as also are parts relevant only to the application. Perhaps this entry will serve more or less as a resumé of my religious and academic background for those readers who are interested. Here goes:   I have explored a fairly wide variety of Christian theology, esp. since beginning my work on a degree in
