Homophobia in the Workplace

Hello, chums.

Today's blog is about something that I encountered today from my infamous Jesus-loving, End-Times-preaching coworkers. Apparently they are bunch of homophobes as well. I'm sure they have a special place reserved for them in heaven. Anyway, here's what happened.

The group (Aida, Bill, Alfred and Diana) were huddled around talking about Juan Gabriel. I walked up and joined the conversation. "Who's Juan Gabriel?" I asked. "Oh," said Aida, "He's a Latino singer. He's like the Elton John of latino musicians. And he's...well, you know.." as she proceeded to make a stereotypical hand gesture.

Then Alfred chimed in with "He's a joto. A fag." Then Diana, the one who sports her "God Answers Prayer" shirt, comes back with "Yeah, what a faggot."

Lovely.

I bit my tongue and didn't say anything. I just nodded and walked away.

Why does this bother me so much, you ask? Well, No. 1, I'm gay myself, although I'm not "out" at work yet obviously. It is insulting to the utmost to have to sit there and listen to your coworkers discriminate against what you yourself are. No. 2, it's the WORKPLACE. It is a form of HARRASSMENT to have to listen to that.

Maybe I'll come into work in drag. Then they'll see just how big of a 'joto' I really am. I might go out and buy a Juan Gabriel CD, too. Fuckers.

End Times and faggots. Praise Jesus.

Thanks for reading...sorry it was short.

Wow. That's just heinous coming from your co-workers. But you know what? Being gay is a personal thing. Who the hell cares what two consenting adults do behind closed doors?

They were brought up in a belief system that taught them to fear and hate what they don't understand. They discriminate against gays because they're ignorant. Plain and simple.

And you're one of the coolest people I know, JP. If they don't like you because of that one part that helps make you you... then they're fools.

Here's what you do: get the next gay-bashing conversation on tape. Bring the tape to your boss and play it. The majority of companies have rules against discrimination. For you, this may result in having to "come out" to your boss to let him/her know you feel discriminated against.

You shouldn't have to sit and bite your tongue when you find something offensive about your co-worker's behaviour. It lowers your self-esteem and your productivity. Happy workers are productive workers. Hell, even the Romans' slaves had bread and circuses. Your boss should realize that, too.

...And buy that Juan Gabriel CD and crank it in your cubicle. woohoo.gif

JP, I am sorry to read this. I often wonder what I should do when faced with this situation. It pisses me off(well, whenever those bible thumping jackasses talk about how the world is coming to an end get in a group it's obnoxious), but I also fear reprisal were I to actually stand up and say something.

Even though it is the workplace the boss himself might be some lunatic Christian homophobe who'll make up some lame reason to fire you if you say you're offended.

Well, you handled it tactfully, and you know who you SHOULDN'T goto lunch with as well.

Christians are so fucking tacky. :Wendywhatever:
