No - that's from my back yard. I'm up a hill a bit away from main city lights so its not too bad. I want to work on my skills and find a nice dark sky site. It's amazing the difference between what you see with your eye vs what you can photograph with the right gear!

I guess folks down under get to see the Milky Way more than us Northerners do: the Night side of Earth faces into the galaxy during northern summers / southern winters, so you get more hours of darkness to see it than we do.  

 

It would be weird to go down there, look up at the night sky and see NONE of the familiar stars or constellations.  Plus, the moon would be ‘upside down’!

Yea the moon is upside down. I've taken a photo and some other member on the same night 12 hours apart and you can see it's like a 180 flip of the image. Explain that flat earthers!

Seriously, join an astronomy club before you start buying gear. Astrophotography is very specialized.

 

You already know this, but for the benefit of anyone else following this, do NOT buy a telescope from a big box store. Those scopes are junk. You need to go to a specialty shop. But don't even do that until you've discussed the idea with some experienced folks. We've had a number of folks come to our club after they've spent bucks on stuff without really understanding what they should have and what to expect from it. Many end up disappointed and wander away. Not only do you need to know about various scopes and their pros and cons, you need to have an understanding of what you can see with them. You will NOT get the views shown in the photos on the packages of the big box store scopes. This isn't the place for a detailed discussion of scopes; suffice to say that there is more to a choice than the uninitiated might think. There is a lot of good info on astronomyforum.net.

Older: The advice I've received so far as astrophotography goes is keep taking shots with my camera. Get a feel how to set them up, exposure times etc. Once I've reached my limitations then think about moving to a scope.
