Just think. 1-07-07 could be the end of the world. We are told that God made the world in 7 days. A day could be symbolic for 1,000 years. So, 2007 will mark 6 thousand years with a rest on the 7th day. Then the first 6 days pass and Christ returns on the 7th day. Your views?

Ignorance breeds superstition; I feel humanity is far better off learning facts regarding the nature of humanity.

Since there is no believability in any of the tales in the Bible why attempt to derive absurd results from unbelievable legends?

I would reply to this, but the only thing that I can come up with at the moment would be along the lines of cutting/biting sarcasm. So, I'll refrain.

This time. :Hmm:

I used something similar to that line of reasoning (and, of course, Hal Lindsay's book The Late Great Planet Earth) to surmise that the Rapture would happen in 1981, the Tribulation would commence and this whole story would be wrapped up by 1988. I guess I was way off.

Do I see smiles of recognition out there?

Yep, sounds plausible.

And the Mayan calendar makes some people think the world will end in 2012. And my UNIX machine will lose its count in 2038 (if I don't patch it) so maybe that means something too?

Add to this fly-byes of meteors and things like that. Oh my.

These all sound reasonable to me now. I can't pick just one. I guess they're all gonna happen.

Meh. Pick a date, any date, and I'm sure you could wrangle the numbers to mean something...

Yep! And when the numbers don't work out (a la the Millerites of 1844 and the Jehovah's Witnesses of 1914) it will be revealeded from on-high that the date, after all, was correct and it was the events that were to transpire in that year that were misunderstood. (That's freedom of religion, but those who want to follow Jesus might be wise to remember his words to the effect that not even he knew when "all these things would be" and the end would come!!)

For more on both groups and their dalliances with dates:

There are a lot of assumed premises going on here with your dating. For one thing was Jesus born in the year 0?

The Christian era ("A.D.") was calculated in the 6th century by a Scythian monk called Denis the Short, who believed he had worked out the year in which Christ was born. Everyone agrees that he made a mistake and that Jesus was in fact born "B.C." But in which year? The answer often given is 6 or 5 B.C., based on the information in St Matthew’s Gospel, that king Herod ordered the massacre of all male children aged two years and under in Bethlehem and the surrounding district. Since the historian Flavius Josephus puts the date of Herod’s death in the spring of 4 B.C., Christ must have been born a year or two earlier. But this date conflicts with the information given by St Luke, that Jesus was born at the time of a census held when Quirinius was governor of Syria, which, once again according to Josephus, took place in 6 A.D., so ten years after Herod’s death. Various attempts have been made to bring the two items or information closer together, but in any case, a Roman census would have been out of the question during the lifetime of Herod, who, though a vassal of Rome, was a sovereign ruler in his own country. So we have to choose between Matthew and Luke.

From here: http://www.op.org/op/ebaf/inwhat.htm

So assuming that 4 BCE was correct birth date, that would put your 1/7/07 date in our now past of 1/07/03. If it is a 6 CE date that would put it at 1/7/13. Now since 13 is an unlucky number, that might have some significance, but then again, it technically wouldn't be the year 2013 but 2007.

Now we are also assuming that December is the birth of Jesus, which of course is nonsense. It was the birth of Tamuz of Babylonian god fame, which was later Christianized by the RCC to facilitate Christianity's introduction into other cultures.

Moreover we are assuming as true the premise that Jesus both actually existed, and that these stories in the Gospel are an accurate historical accounting of this character's actual life and sayings. It is quite possible that some religious person may have existed as the basis of these stories, but that the entire "narratives" are simply a vehicle for religious sayings, prophecies, instruction, etc from many different schools of thought, "Jesus" become this, larger-than-life founding figure of this eclectic religious movement. If all this is true than birth dates are completely moot as the Jesus of the Gospels is an idea, and not an actual man.

BTW, the prophecies of end times in the Gospels reflect the mindset of the writers of their culture looking to the end of Roman rule. We are taking these religious prophecies that Christianity adopted from other cultures, and are likewise putting them into the mouth of Jesus as an authoritative source of these sorts of ideas. They did it in the first century, they did it in the dark ages, they did it throughout all ages, and we are still doing it today.

If anything, these myths have withstood the test of time in that they are still holding power over people’s fears and imagination. I guess to be gracious, that could speak to the "miracle" of them, like a piece of music that transcends culture and time. But it the sense of art, not a truth in a temporal sense. So could we call them "divine" then, in the sense of art that is "eternal" or timeless in this way??? (Oh... that people would take them this way, rather than going off the deep end in believing it will actually happen).

Bottom, line the "second coming" is like the section of music that inspires imagination, like the cannon fire in the 1812 Overture. They're not actually going to blow holes in your walls (though they certainly can destroy your speaker's tweeters from the clipping that occurs in the reproduction of an 8 hertz fundamental tone on the Telarc LP release), but they inspire if you allow yourself be taken away, or "raptured" in the moment of sound!

I am planning to move to a new location around that date to make a fresh start in life and will be looking forward to it. So Jesus is gonna spoil my plans then :P

I see things a bit differently, but I must comment on the beauty of these two paragraphs -- their point and the writing itself.

*Sigh* Ah, here we go again... lol...

I remember the end of the world that was supposed to occur in 1994. I was in Christian high school, and I was anxious the whole day. :D

And this is assuming that God uses the Gregorian calendar. (or that a dualistic God exists, Christ exists, and that God wants to destroy the world, but that is off topic).

So people still believe in this whole "end of the world" crap? How many freakin' times have they been wrong? Every time they assumed that it would be the end of the world!

Religion aside, what are the current possibilites of the world ending in 2007? Unless nukes start flying across nations, I don't see it. Unless scientists find out that a new meteor is heading towards earth, I don't see it. Unless radiation poisoning escapes some confidential chemical lab and turns people into zombies, I don't see it.

Sorry, OP...but you're joking right?

It has the same chance as any other day.
We are told that God made the world in 7 days.
That's a lie you are being told.
A day could be symbolic for 1,000 years.
Pretty stupid symbol.

What happens after this "armageddon" thing? It's not the end of the world, it's the beginning of a thousand years of peace. Why is there peace? BECAUSE ALL THE CHRISTIANS ARE GONE!

Throughout the millennia, various people have predicted various dates as being the end of the world. Guess what? None of them have happened.

If the world ends, it'll probably be because of people using nukes or something, no doubt over a religious war.
