Contradictions In The Bible ...

Man, this site has changed dramatically! Not just in looks, but there is alot more tolerance in the forums. Maybe I just haven't clicked onto the right topics yet.

Anyways, the reason for the post is this:

One of the things that seems to be fairly common in arguments against Christianity is discrepancies in the Bible.

What I want to know is which ones are where? I just want to have a look into them for myself. I don't really want to start an argument with this thread as I'm only after some information to act as a starting point. And where else am I going to get such a large response about discrepancies in the Bible?

Thanks heaps,

Joel B.

PS - Just by the way, is that a smiley face licking him (or her) self to the left of the text box when your writing a post??

Great Scott, that's a huge list!!!

Joel, I guess from your post that you've been around this site before. Regarding the tolerance, I can't tell, I think it's just a person-to-person basis, and the forum is probably larger then last time you were here.

(I would never think that anyone would ever say we were tolerant! :HaHa: )

Thanks guys!

Joel, you said you don't want to argue. Someday we still love to see how you do apologetics on the 300+ contradictions. Be it so all of the contradictions are "out-of-context", if this is your argument, explain to us every one of them the context of "out-of-context".

There is sometimes a plausible way to explain away a few of the seeming contradictions. I think most here can agree that not every contradiction may not actually be one. But aside from those, there are far more that cant be explained away unless you really want to perform some crazy mental gymnastics.

Thanks TD for the links. I think most of us are aware of tektonics and carm, ovrlnd is new to me.

Some are good on their terms.

However, the list for Joel is theological contradictions in greater proportions, fewer are "technical contradictions" like how many in numbers in this situation and that.....fairly speaking, what were Jesus last words and how many angels appeared by the burial cave of Jesus when Mary visited do not form the basis of Christian faith.

Meanwhile the links you provided are more about "technical contradictions" in greater proportions and fewer about addressing theological / dogmatic contradictions that relate to the foundation of faith.

Please take the time to look at the links and see if you would agree with me or not.

One of the things that seems to be fairly common in arguments against Christianity is discrepancies in the Bible.

Which Christianity are you referring to? Certainly not mainstream Christianity. They don't take the Bible as literally true or without errors. That apparently isn't important to them as part of their faith. So to argue against something they don't believe in anyway seems sort of pointless, doesn't it? Unless of course we're referring to the segment of Christianity that believes in the absolute infallibility of the Bible in matters of faith, history, and science, and call themselves True Christians and all the rest not Christians, or "wrong"?

It never ceases to bewilder me how some people's faith needs proof. That's a greater mystery than the theology of the Trinity doctrine.

1 John 4:8

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:16

16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.

1 Cor. 13:4-5

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs

Mark 16:16

16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Rev. 20:12-13

12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.

Guest Joel Beeson

Thanks everyone for your help.

It was a longer list than I was perhaps expecting, but it will be interesting to work through them all. My aim is not to come back to you with an answer to all of them, because I won't be able to, but purely just for my own benefit.

I'm not doing this to find proof for my beliefs - there's enough of that around for me to keep believing. I like to study the Bible and I figure that by researching into what other people claim as being inconsistencies, some more pertinent truths might be revealed to me (just like when you study further into any other book!)

And be serious, Antlerman - there are heaps of posts on this site and many others that state that Christianity is false because the Bible is contradictory. It doesn't matter whether it is an irrelevant topic to most Christians, because its relevant to those that argue it.

Its getting late now, so good night.

Proof for Beliefs. I asked before, and like to ask again, why does faith need proof???

I am being serious. Most Christians do not believe in the infalliblity of the Bible. It is true that around here everyone will tend to generalize fundis as "Christians", since a great many of us came out of that world. Myself I try to always distingush "fundamentalist Christians", but contextually this is what most of are referring to. I also think it is important for us as ExChristians coming out of fundamentalism to make this distinction and not assume that disproof of the Bible invalidate what the majority of Christians base their faith on. Most Christains ----- do not need proof for their faith, unlike the literalists who need something to bolster faith, apparantly.

I'd like to play Devil's Advocate (how fitting!) for a minute.

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that Christians went through ALL of their many Bibles, made them not only match in every way, but then edited out ALL of the errors and contradictions so that it now reads as a seemless and perfect Whole. What then?

WOULD ANY OF US THEN BELIEVE IT?

I know that I wouldn't. Just because a group of Christians managed to set aside their doctrinal differences and came up with a perfectly EDITED "word of god", that does NOT now make it "The Word of God". It would STILL be a book of fable, fiction, folklore and forgery, not worthy of belief.

I don't care how many of these "so-called contradictions" can be explained or rationalized. It STILL remains a work of FICTION, and I ain't buying it.

So...Why all the who-hah? Who gives a rat's ass about the holy babble? I don't.

Ah, well. You may now return to your regularly scheduled waste of time discussion.

P.S. - I agree with Antlerman. Why does Faith require Proof? Answer: It doesn't. Faith, by definition, is believing in SPITE of the lack of PROOF. The very moment you have Proof, you invalidate the need for Faith. They are mutuallly exclusive notions. So why do Xians constantly seek to "prove" their "faith" by validating/correcting errors in their bible?

Someone seems a mite bit schizo to me. Either that or embarrassed by an illogical belief system. :wicked:

Be careful about going through that list Christian. Many of us lost our faith from studying the bible. If you won't like the answers you might not want to search for the answers.

What I want to know is which ones are where? I just want to have a look into them for myself. I don't really want to start an argument with this thread as I'm only after some information to act as a starting point. And where else am I going to get such a large response about discrepancies in the Bible?

Let's start with the big ones that are not interbiblical discrepancies.

1. Existence of Jesus is unverified.

2. God does not exist and that's a big claim in the bible.

3. Historically, there are a number of things wrong with certain prophecies in the bible, specifically the prophecies in Ezekiel regarding Tyre and Egypt.

You know.... I could always attempt to try to rationalize how Khan knew Chekov, even though Chekov wasn't in Star Trek when Space Seed was produced. I could just claim that Chekov was on the Enterprise, but wasn't a member of the bridge crew yet. That could solve a contradiction in Star Trek.

But it still doesn't make Star Trek true

Likewise, your attempt to reconcile Biblical contradictions fails to realize that it still doesn't prove the Bible.

OK. I agree with your point Mr Grinch, about faith and proofs being mutually exclusive. I think the point I was meaning to make was that I am not going through the list provided to bolster my faith by proving that there are no inconsistencies in the bible.

Antlerman, the choice of phrase I used was wrong. I maintain that I don't need proof for my faith (but in most other areas of this forum the question is asked for proof of Christianity), but the things I called "proofs" are better termed as "suggestions" ... ie there is enough suggestions of the existence of God that continues my faith.

But I guess the issue about Bible contradictions is a moot point as suggested. A totally consistent Bible isn't going to convince people that it's true.

But I'll keep working through them for my own sake.

PS - I really enjoy this site by the way. Makes me think about things I may not have thought about before.

Greetings JB,

I'm interested in that point you made. I have not heard it before. I have come across something similar. "Even if God showed himself to everyone there would still be people who disbelieve".

I really disagree with your statement. Wouldn't a totally consistent bible add more weight to what it is saying? Inconsistencies have led people away from Christianity and prevented others from converting. What makes you think otherwise?

I appreciate the response. It's the only one anyone has offered the countless times I have asked it of Biblical literalists. So would it be right to say that you are approaching biblical apologetics as a way to strengthen the cohesiveness and the presentation of evidences which to you suggest a tangible, credible truth behind the claims it makes? In other words, trying to establish the credibility of the messenger as a credible witness, who we can then believe in the content of their words in presenting tales of the supernatural?

I don't agree with you in your statement that a totally consistent Bible wouldn't be convincing. People seem to have bought into it pretty much as a book a facts for quite a few generations until knowledge of other cultures and the sciences, and primarily - access to the bible itself, shed light on a vastly different looking reality than one portrayed in mythology. People are coming to terms in the modern world that it isn't a book of science or real history, yet it doesn't matter to most people who believe anyway since it's not about "fact" for them.

The push to literalism and fundamentalism in this country began as a reactionary movement that started last century in response to modernism. Education and knowledge of children from rural areas threatened the simple rules of faith and social norms for those back at home. What is happening most places outside the edges is that Christians are redefining how they approach their faith. That will be the only thing that saves it from imploding as it from becoming ever more isolationist in its anti-knowledge. Biblical literalism in the modern age is a cultural phenomenon.

I have no problem with, like the majority of mainstream Christians also have no problem with, the Bible having meaning to people as a book of spiritual meaning (or knowledge) written in the language of myth. It was humans who had a message to share of insights that they came to, presented in the language of metaphor, parables, mythologies, etc. The "histories" are literary vehicles. It's clear to most people that the effort to make mythology true history is the pounding of a square peg into a round hole, and shows a problem with that approach to religious belief that will ultimately fail. The only way it will succeed is if all knowledge is suppressed and destroyed, as is a favorite tactic of the fundamentalist with political power (refer to the Taliban as one example).

Be careful about going through that list Christian. Many of us lost our faith from studying the bible. If you won't like the answers you might not want to search for the answers.

Greetings, IAm Lucifer.

In all fairness to Joel Beeson, it wasn't he who introduced this idea, but me. Joel was simply conceding that I made a valid argument. So, even though you addressed Joel, I think it only proper that I field your question.

A totally consistent bible, RENDERED CONSISTENT BY THE LATTER EDITING HAND OF MAN, could ONLY serve to now invalidate the bible as the "Word of God." This is the FEAR of biblical inerrantists.

The claim has always been that this Word Of God is INSPIRED by God and therefore "perfect". Yet, we all know of the MANY errors and contradictions within it's pages. But rather than confess that "God" made mistakes, the theologian must warp all logic and common sense to explain away these mistakes. Thus maintaining the illusion that the Bible is inspired and error-free, but that it is MAN who has the short-sighted problem of false interpretation.

Correcting or editing out these mistakes would be a fatal confession that God made the mistakes, and is therefore not perfect. (Can't have that!) OR an even more grievous error of conceding that MAN is the one who wrote the bible to begin with, and that's why the mistakes exist. (Once more, you can't have that!)

Think about it, people: Let's say that the church now confessed that the bible was FULL OF ERRORS and that they were going to set out to fix them. Just as any editor/writer would do to any work of FICTION. Do you REALLY think the church could survive such a confession? Such a confession is to admit that GOD screwed up! OR that man is the one responsible for this silly book to begin with.

And as I said before, just because you can write the bible so that it now agrees in every detail, how does this HUMAN effort now make it the "Word of God"?

Take for instance the story of Jesus and the demon possessed man/men of Gadara/Gerasa/Gergesa as related in the 3 synoptics. Re-write it so NOW it makes more sense. Does this editing trick suddenly make it true that "Jesus" cast out a "demon" named "Legion" into a herd of swine that then killed themselves? Not hardly. It's just better and more readable fiction. Just like cleaning up the mistakes or inconsistencies of competing Star Trek novels.

No, dear readers, the church is now stuck with their inconsistent bible and will have to content themselves with chicanery, smoke and mirrors, intellectual dishonesty (sweep it under the rug and ignore the smell of offal) and strong arm tactics to keep the faithful and gullible believing it.

It's really a catch-22... if the bible is coherant and infaillible it probably was written and edited over time by man or god wrote it (guess which one is more plausible), on the other hand if the bible has faults it cannot have been god who authored it since god is all-knowing and perfect and yaddi-yadda. They're screwed as long as they claim the bible is the innerant word of gawd.
