  1. Hi everyone! My name is Amy. I did not grow up in a Christian family. My family involves two loving and kind parents, but my dad is a non-practicing Mormon and my mom is an agnostic. Religion was not something that I thought of very much and neither did my parents. My extent of church going was Sunday school a couple times when I was little. In sixth grade, I made up my own mind to be atheist. I learned that there were a bunch of religions in the world, and there was no way any particular one could be correct. Then, I went on with my life. That was about the extent of my religious back

  3. I think any religious person is unqualified to work with people who have mental problems since they have mayor mental problems themselves. And it actually does more worse then it does good (depends how you look at it). If someone has a shit life.. and you say.. well you will go to heaven so you will be happy then.. you are totally screwing up that persons life. Sure you maybe make it more bearable to go true shit.. but it shops people with dealing and getting rid of shit. Why is there a heaven? Well if you ask me just to bribe people. Give them a shitty life, steal all there money(church) an

  5. Welcome to the forums, FloridaGirl. I have also met a lot of the condescending Christian types. Most of which are within my own family, lol. I know you'll find your browsing experience very fulfilling here. It helps a lot to have a network and community of people who not only won't throw you to the wolves for what you believe (or what you don't) -- but will also encourage you and have your back. I'm glad you've found yourself. Don't let any of those holier-than-thou's rob you of your self-worth. It's not worth getting upset over. I feel more sorry for those types than I do anything...

  6. We disagree on the criteria of the Torah being against something. You take a narrow approach to it. I don't . If the Torah respects the poor, sick, and feeble among us, and it says not to favor the son of the loved wife, this is good enough reason to say that the Torah is against Eugenics, which does favor the better stock. You can't admit to the clearest error. You said I said that the Torah mentions eugenics. That is patently wrong and you can't admit it. Even if my criteria is incorrect (which it is not, but even if), I still did not say that the Torah actually mentions eugenics. A

  7. Let us all admit that this is the hottest thread on this forum. Admit it or not I think everyone is enjoying it. I actually think Contra and mymistake (who cause me no end of grief) are very smart. They or I can still be wrong though. You don't often get around here someone with a completely different world view, who can defend their arguments and stand up to all the pressure. This thread has covered a lot of great topics. I might give a whole grammar lesson soon. I taught my self grammar to a fairly high level. I don't always use it though. No time to correct every typing mis

  8. Sometimes you may have to play the bad guy to protect the ones you love. That doesn't mean that you are the bad guy, merely that you have become an inconvenient obstacle to someone else's desire to disrespect and control you. Put your own and your immediate family's safety and happiness first, and consider it an investment in your futures. If necessary, go full no-contact - Block or change channels of phone and e-mail communication, and cheerfully hang up without explanation the instant someone crosses one of your boundaries. Because when someone is abusing you, you owe them no explanat

  9. Yeah. Great. That means little. It's just the book patting itself on the back and being smug that it's right because it says that it is. Nothing of any real value here to be honest. Broken down "Wise people understand things, Prudent people know stuff, people who do good stuff are just. People who don't are lame." Why do we need religion to tell us this again? Actually that last one about 'walking the path of the Lord' is a bit suspect. God isn't exactly a model of good behavior in the Torah, nor are the things he often commands and/or condones great examples of morality. I'll

  10. Yeah, most Christians "believe that God can do anything." When they pray for something minor or inconsequential, and due to random circumstances, it happens, they take it as proof that God answers prayers. I once heard an example of a woman praying that a parking spot would open up at Wal-Mart, and when it did, she took it as proof of the glory of God! But try praying that God will save your marriage, relieve your crushing debt, or cure a desperately ill family member (all things I've prayed for). You'll get no relief and no answers. Children still die, Christian families still fall apart

  11. I think all religion or sprituality is similar to taking drugs, drinking tons of alcohol every night, or spending hours zoning out in front of the TV. It is all just a way of avoiding reality. Since leaving religion, it has been so much easier to identify problems and solve them. I am no longer in a perpetually numb state shuffling from church meeting to church meeting and mindlessly reading stacks of "inspirational" books written by pastors. No matter what form following the "supernatural" takes, it always leads you further away from reality. It takes all the beautiful, crisp lin

  12. Funny, I don't see a Mod tag in your ID. I'm afraid that the fact that you started the thread doesn't give you such control or authority over it. Nor do you have the authority to 'disqualify' the posts of others. Feel free to not respond, but you're going to step on the Mods toes if you keep talking like that and end up justifiably B&. Probably patting yourself on the back while telling yourself it was because we were intolerant jerks, and not because of anything you did. You're fortunate as a lot of other Forums have Mods who would have done it the first time you posted someth

  13. I give end3 more credit than that, but you probably just gave OC some cud to chew on. I've always been uncomfortable with the Copenhagen view, it just feels "messy" to me. So I've toyed with the idea of formulating God as that which collapses the wave function for Schrodinger's cat. But as always, I never come to a point that would require a creator "God." Instead, I usually arrive at a point where God is indistinguishable from the fundamental laws of logic.

  15. I think the analogy you are looking for would be that of a black hole. It has 0 dimensions (with the possible exception of time if you want to bring in Feynman diagrams, and that gets truly hairy) yet has infinite gravity (yet has a finite mass.) I still can't shake the thought that our Universe is in fact a black hole with an infinite Schwarzschild radius in that it is impossible for us to measure or even see the edge. (BAA or Bhim can probably show that I am full of crap on this, but it still feels good philosophically. )

  18. But...but...he keeps being -wrong-! Seriously though, he keeps bringing this [and various other things he's been long since proven wrong about] back up and trying to act like it's -our- fault he is wrong, and at the same time as if he's not wrong at all, even though that doesn't make any sense, he's somehow managed it. That's why he's getting treated this way. He's gotten hostile and dismissive and we're treating him as most would to such behavior. Though, I admit it is a bit like sand blasting a soup cracker.

  19. In other words, you know that you were wrong, but it doesn't matter because you're right. BTW in regard to Mathematics, being precise is the most important thing. It's useless if you're not precise, it is absolutely essential that your formulas be correct. The essence of math is precision. There is a reason that Math teachers require that you show your work. If you come to the correct answer by chance using the wrong formula, you still fail because you can't show that you understood the calculation. Even if the answer is still correct, the problem is still wrong. Inaccurate and impreci

I have some very beautiful meditation music and every time I play it, I can shed tears and I don't know why...it's not happy music or sad music.. it's just so beautiful? It is my spirit moving within me - not the holy sprit. I am so glad you're here with us Blake!!

  25. Margee, I sure can relate. Whether it's solemn Orthodox chanting or contemporary Gaither-style productions, it still causes a little stirring in my heart. I've learned that feeling emotions as a result of listening to this music doesn't constitute the reality of "God" at all, just the reality of human passion. Before I would have called it the Holy Spirit. Today I simply call it the human spirit. Music evokes strong emotions in us, and that's a completely natural thing. Combine that fact with old feelings of communal "on fire" worship and it's easy to see why people get so riled up about it.

  29. I know exactly who I'm going to be in ten years - me. I'll probably be a little more beat up, a little more weary, a lot more experienced and probably a lot more jaded, but one of the benefits about honest introspection and continual self-inventory is that there's nothing substantial about myself that I haven't already taken out and examined in the cold light of that internal laboratory. When you can compartmentalize and examine your experiences as well as I do, there's no reason to fear some kind of strange shift in personality because who I am already shifts constantly. So ten years fr

  31. A friend posted a video of Three Dog Night's song Shambala and added this: Chuck Negron (dark hair and moustache.) apparently sobered up during live appearances, but was a drug addict of over twenty years, and is only alive today through the grace of God. Grace should be obvious even to the non believer. I'd feel better about 'grace' if it were extended to helpless children who are abused and murdered, rather than to rock stars who are damn well capable of digging themselves out of their own excesses.

  33. LOL! LOVE it!!!! Lol that is greatness. Funny thing is, it's only biblical depending on which part of the Bible you're reading. If you're reading 1 Timothy 2:4, "...who wants all men to be saved..." But if you're reading John 12:40, "He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them." So does God give everyone a friend request? Depends on which part of the Bible you're reading. More verses tend to say "no" then "yes", however.
