Most christians I run into nowdays just seem to make shit up wildly as they go. You cant fight it with Bible-knowledge cause they dont care. Me: “Bible says... “ Them: “Oh thats ok, I just do...” As fundamentals fall, there is an increasingly huge puddle of people doing/saying/believing whatever they feel like. They will have their own personal little denomination based on nothing and yet still count themselves in the Christian camp. Weird. Prob always been that way but I see it more now personally

I have religious family members and friends on facebook, and this time of year they start whining about "Jesus" being the "reason for the season", and "it's merry christmas, not happy holidays" and so on, and so forth. I am getting so tired of this bullshit. They talk about people getting offended when they say merry Christmas, but the only people I see whining and getting offended are Christians when someone says "happy holidays". I have very politely offered my point of view--that a friendly greeting should be returned in kind, however it is worded--and now I think they believe I'm some kind of demon, or something. Not that I care...maybe I can scare them with my evil, demonic nature.

I now swear releasing anger and feel I can now enjoy myself. I watched a cartoon with magic and feel I no longer have guilt and pain inside me anymore. I feel I don’t have to live a certain way or please God. I have stopped crying and screaming at God for answers. I have stopped praying and feel so liberated!

You guys may be right. Problem is, one of the preachy types happens to be my brother. We used to be quite close. We could have an intellectual conversation about science, astronomy, space travel, and other nerd topics. But then, a few years ago, the christian noose fell around his neck and stopped the bloodflow to his brain. All he thinks about now is that damned cult. I mourn his loss.

Nailed it, @Joshpantera. That's why is can be challenging to hang it up. When you make the big announcement or just stop attending the weekly fundyfest you are also, in some eyes, eschewing the "good" part of society or just "our" cross section of it. I'm doing my best to show the fams that I'm still the same buttnugget I always was.

Part of my canned evangelical training. Part of the assumptive sales pitch I used at around 100 households, and, "closing" nearly half of them with "the prayer of acceptance". The thought of it all makes me Ill.

You just can't win with these kinds of people. I make a point of not even having them on Facebook. I can only take so much whining. And I never need to worry about what people think about my views on FB since none of them are friends with me.

I agree with Josh. She likely doesn't even realize how manipulative she's being. My take - if someone told me one day they don't see a future with me, and the next, that they're willing to do what "god decides" - well, I likely would tell them I don't want to hear from them anymore right after they told me they don't see a future with me. Also, I would have done my best to ensure the above scenario that occurred with you in this last post wouldn't even have occurred (ie I'd have made a clean break and told them after episode one that we not be in touch anymore). I would see nothing but heartbreak and hardship down the road in this kind of relationship.

The odd part was that no matter how many times we quoted verses and claimed promises, we always gave him a pass when he utterly failed to keep his promises or honor the verses. Believers have to keep telling themselves that god is faithful anyway and has a better plan. Try that in the business world when you don't keep a contract or promise. Have one of your reps tell the other company "Oh, just trust him. He has a better plan (that he won't explain or give you any clues about). In fact even death is better, because you get to be with him forever!! Now tell him again how utterly great he is! Steeeevvvvee Jooooobbbbsss glooorrryyy awwwwesommmm...." For me, the part I hated the most was MIS-quotes, like "As a man thinketh in his heart, so it he". They would preach on that like it was some kind of New Age truism that what you think, you become. But the actual quote is "Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony, for as he thinks in his heart, so is he". Taken in full context, Solomon is warning his newbie son about politics. Other kings will want to make treaties and deals, throw big parties for you, give you lots of wine and women, but all the while their hidden (in his heart) intent is to kill you and take your kingdom. Kind of a different meaning, huh? There is one, Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." So... we should do what seems wrong to us? Stupid verse. Yeah, people make mistakes. The implied meaning is that the Bible will always have the right answer even if it seems stupid. But as we found out from experience in reality, it really is stupid to trust made up stories and primitive myths instead of what we can test and see.

People are as they are. What they believe is largely incidental. Happy people tend to make happy atheists, and happy theists, for that matter. Unhappy people tend to be unhappy regardless of their belief structure as well.

I told my husband a few months ago I needed to tell him something,that I couldn't carry it on my own anymore. We sat on the couch and I shared I wasn’t a Christian anymore and that I didn’t believe in Jesus. We both cried some and he told me “I’ve never been through this before but I’m here and I love you.” And he does. Sometimes I go to church with him and our children. We still hold hands around the table to pray for dinner but he doesn’t ask me to take a turn anymore. We choose each other and I trust his heart. It helps that he’s never been very loud about his faith. He quietly lives it out by being a good husband and father and I’m very lucky.

Christianity broke my brain, and the disparity between what the Bible says and what we experience/observie in reality is one of the last straws that broke this camel's back. True--there is no verifiable evidence. A friend of mine was a charismatic, evangelical missionary in an African country. She saw some interesting things, but nothing beyond minor that didn't revert to its usual state once the adrenalin wore off. Pretty disappointing. It seems God's ability to pull off miracles seems to have atrophied over time: from flooding the earth or parting seas, to merely finding the odd believer a parking spot. God did not heal me of a simple medical condition that prevented me from coming to church. Not even getting a break to go once in a while! Christians could not explain why God "won't let me come to church", other than maybe I'd sinned. Yup, they know how to kick you when you're down! Christianity has had me on a wild goose chase for decades, running hither and yon for the touch of God. I have since healed myself, thank you very much. But the search for healing that does not exist is enough to make anyone nuts. This is me looking for a miracle: Me as an atheist: Christianity broke my brain!
